Ādi-parva Adhyāya 132 — Duryodhana’s Instructions to Purocana at Vāraṇāvata

ततः स वारुणास्त्रेण पूरयित्वा कमण्डलुम् । सममाचार्यपुत्रेण गुरुम भ्येति फाल्गुन:,अतः वे वारुणास्त्रसे तुरंत ही अपना कमण्डलु भरकर आचार्यपुत्रके साथ ही गुरुके समीप आ जाते थे, इसलिये आचार्यपुत्रसे किसी भी गुणकी वृद्धिमें वे अलग या पीछे न रहे। यही कारण था कि मेधावी अर्जुन अश्व॒त्थामासे किसी बातमें कम न रहे। वे अस्त्रवेत्ताओंमें सबसे श्रेष्ठ थे। अर्जुन अपने गुरुदेवकी सेवा-पूजाके लिये भी उत्तम यत्न करते थे। अस्त्रोंके अभ्यासमें भी उनकी अच्छी लगन थी। इसीलिये वे ट्रोणाचार्यके बड़े प्रिय हो गये
tataḥ sa vāruṇāstreṇa pūrayitvā kamaṇḍalum | samam ācāryaputreṇa gurum abhyeti phālgunaḥ ||
Entonces Phālguna (Arjuna), valiéndose del arma de Varuṇa, llenó al instante su cantimplora y acudió de inmediato ante su maestro, manteniéndose al paso del hijo del ācārya. Así no quedó rezagado respecto del hijo del maestro en logro alguno ni en el aumento de destreza. Por ello el inteligente Arjuna no fue en nada inferior a Aśvatthāmā: llegó a ser el primero entre los conocedores de las armas, y por su diligente servicio y reverencia hacia su guru, junto con una práctica constante, se volvió especialmente querido para Droṇa.
