Karna’s Entry, Duel Proposal, and Consecration as King of Aṅga
तापसा ऊचु हित्वा राज्यं च राष्ट्र च स महात्मा महायशा: । अस्मिन् स्थाने तपस्तप्त्वा तापसाउ्शरणं गत:,तपस्वी बोले--महान् यशस्वी महात्मा राजा पाण्डु अपना राज्य तथा राष्ट्र छोड़कर इस स्थानपर तपस्या करते हुए तपस्वी मुनियोंकी शरणमें रहते थे
tāpasā ūcuḥ hitvā rājyaṃ ca rāṣṭraṃ ca sa mahātmā mahāyaśāḥ | asmin sthāne tapastaptvā tāpasāśaraṇaṃ gataḥ ||
Dijeron los ascetas: “Aquel de gran alma y alta fama —el rey Pāṇḍu—, tras renunciar a su realeza y a su reino, practicó austeridades en este mismo lugar y vivió aquí bajo el amparo y la guía de los sabios del bosque.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical ideal that worldly power (rājya, rāṣṭra) may be relinquished when one turns toward self-discipline and higher dharma; true greatness is shown not only in rule but also in restraint, austerity, and seeking the guidance of sages.
Ascetics describe how King Pāṇḍu, famed and noble, abandoned his royal position and kingdom, practiced austerities at that very location, and lived there taking refuge among the forest sages.
