Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 103 — Dhṛtarāṣṭra–Gāndhārī Vivāha: Proposal, Consent, and the Vow
विनिश्ित्य स धर्मज्ञो ब्राह्मणैवेंदपारगै: । अनुजने तदा ज्येष्ठामम्बां काशिपते: सुताम्,वे स्वयं भी धर्मके ज्ञाता थे, फिर भी वेदोंके पारंगत विद्वान ब्राह्मणोंक साथ भलीभाँति विचार करके उन्होंने काशिराजकी ज्येष्ठ पुत्री अम्बाको उस समय शाल्वके यहाँ जानेकी अनुमति दे दी
viniścitya sa dharmajño brāhmaṇair vedapāragaiḥ | anujajñe tadā jyeṣṭhām ambāṃ kāśipateḥ sutām ||
Dijo Vaiśampāyana: Aunque él mismo era conocedor del dharma, tras deliberar cuidadosamente junto con brāhmaṇas eruditos, consumados en los Vedas, entonces concedió permiso a Ambā—la hija mayor del señor de Kāśī—para que fuese a Śālva.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Dharma in sensitive social matters is to be determined through careful inquiry and consultation with competent authorities (Veda-learned brāhmaṇas), and by honoring rightful prior bonds—here, allowing Ambā to go to Śālva.
After reflection and counsel, the decision is made to permit Ambā, the eldest daughter of the king of Kāśī, to depart for Śālva—indicating recognition of her prior attachment/claim and an attempt to act justly.
