The verse highlights a dharmic tension between personal renunciation or withdrawal (śānti) and social responsibility—especially the obligation to sustain lineage and orderly succession. It frames grief as arising from uncertainty about how duty-bound continuity will be maintained if the responsible person steps back.
The speaker reports a concerned address to a younger person: the elder is troubled that if the other becomes pacified and refrains from action, the family line and its succession may fail. He concludes by stating that this worry is the full reason for his sorrow.
