अनुक्रमणिकाध्यायः (Anukramaṇikā Adhyāya) — Invocation, Narrator Frame, and Textual Scope
यदाश्रौषं कर्णदुर्योधनाभ्यां बुद्धि कृतां निग्रहे केशवस्य । त॑ चात्मानं बहुधा दर्शयानं तदा नाशंसे विजयाय संजय,संजय! जब मैंने सुना कि कर्ण और दुर्योधन दोनोंने यह सलाह की है कि श्रीकृष्णको कैद कर लिया जाय और श्रीकृष्णने अपने-आपको अनेक रूपोंमें विराट् या अखिल विश्वके रूपमें दिखा दिया, तभीसे मैंने विजयाशा त्याग दी थी
yadāśrauṣaṃ karṇa-duryodhanābhyāṃ buddhiṃ kṛtāṃ nigrahe keśavasya | taṃ cātmānaṃ bahudhā darśayānaṃ tadā nāśaṃse vijayāya saṃjaya ||
¡Sañjaya! Cuando oí que Karṇa y Duryodhana habían urdido el plan de apresar a Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), y luego lo vi revelarse en múltiples formas—manifestando la visión cósmica, vasta y abarcadora—en ese mismo instante abandoné toda esperanza de victoria. La intención de violar el dharma encarcelando a un emisario divino, enfrentada a la revelación del poder inconmensurable de Kṛṣṇa, volvió inconfundible el desenlace moral y estratégico.
Schemes rooted in adharma—such as violating the sanctity of a messenger and attempting to imprison the righteous—carry their own downfall. The verse links moral transgression with inevitable defeat, underscored by the revelation of Kṛṣṇa’s divine, cosmic sovereignty.
The speaker recalls hearing that Karṇa and Duryodhana planned to seize Kṛṣṇa. In response, Kṛṣṇa reveals Himself in many forms, a vast cosmic manifestation. Witnessing this, the speaker tells Saṃjaya that he immediately lost hope of victory for the side plotting the capture.
