Ruci and the Pitṛs: On Marriage, Debts (Ṛṇa), and Desireless Karma
Pitris (Pitarah)
Concept: Ritual action alone does not grant liberation; however, properly performed action is a causal support for the attainment of true knowledge.
Vedantic Theme: Karma as antahkarana-shuddhi-hetu (means to mental purification) leading to jnana; rejection of mere ritualism while retaining karma’s preparatory role (samanvaya).
Application: Perform duties without absolutizing them; use disciplined action, service, and ethical living to purify mind, then pursue study, reflection, and contemplation for knowledge.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: vira
Related Themes: Garuda Purana teachings that bhakti/jnana are liberating while karma supports purification (general thematic parallel)
It says karma alone is not liberation, but properly performed action can become a supporting cause for attaining true knowledge (vidyā), which is central for liberation.
It frames progress as moving from avidyā (ignorance) toward vidyā (true knowledge), with dharmic action serving as preparation rather than the final goal.
Do duties and rituals with ethical discipline and right intention, while also pursuing study, reflection, and inner understanding—treating action as a means to clarity, not as the ultimate end.
