Nirūpaṇa (Nāḍī–Svara-Nirūpaṇam): Breath Currents, Omens, and Action-Timing
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: The nābhi region hosts an immense wheel-like network of nāḍīs; disturbance here can affect prāṇa and life itself.
Vedantic Theme: Impermanence and dependence of embodied life on prāṇa; impetus for disciplined regulation and non-negligence (apramāda).
Application: Protect vitality through moderated diet, posture, and breath; avoid reckless strain; cultivate prāṇāyāma under guidance, respecting the ‘wheel’ of prāṇa.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Type: subtle bodily hub (cakra-like arrangement)
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.67.7 (kanda as source); Garuda Purana 1.67.9 (three chief nāḍīs)
This verse highlights the navel-region as a key hub of subtle channels; understanding nāḍīs and prāṇa flow is presented as essential for grasping how vitality is sustained—and withdrawn—at death.
By stating that wheel-like channels at the navel are “prāṇa-hara,” it points to the mechanism by which prāṇa is drawn away from the body, a crucial step before the jīva proceeds into post-death states described elsewhere in the Purana.
It encourages prāṇa-discipline (ethical living, breath awareness, and spiritual practice) and respect for life-energy, aligning one’s conduct toward steadiness and preparedness for life’s transitions.
