Brahma-vidyā through Yoga: Restraint, Pranava Japa, and Samādhi leading to Mokṣa
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Greed, delusion, and anger propel sinful action; sin is executed through key instruments—hands, genitals, belly/appetite, and speech.
Vedantic Theme: Kleśa/saṃskāra-driven karma: inner afflictions externalize through body and speech, binding the jīva to consequences.
Application: Track triggers of lobha/moha/krodha; adopt vows: non-stealing with hands, brahmacarya/sexual restraint, moderation in food, and truthful/beneficial speech.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: raudra
Related Themes: Garuda Purana: lists of pāpa and their fruits; emphasis on controlling speech and appetite; Garuda Purana: dharma sections on ahiṃsā, asteya, śauca
This verse presents lobha (greed), moha (delusion), and krodha (anger) as key inner drivers that propel a person into pāpa (sin), so mastering them is foundational to dharma and good karma.
By identifying the motives (greed, delusion, anger) and the “instruments” (hands, sex-organ, appetite, speech) through which actions are performed, the verse explains how karmic causes are generated—leading to future consequences described in the Purana’s afterlife teachings.
Practise restraint in four areas: ethical use of hands (actions), sexual discipline, moderation in food and consumption, and truthful non-harmful speech—while actively reducing greed, confusion, and anger through self-awareness and dharmic conduct.
