tasmāc chṛṇuṣva rājendra yathā bhuñjīta vai gṛhī bhuñjataś ca yathā puṃsaḥ pāpabandho na jāyate
Therefore, O best of kings, listen: I shall tell you how a householder ought to partake and enjoy—and how, even while enjoying, a man does not become bound by the fetters of sin.
Sage Parāśara (in instruction, addressing a kingly figure within the discourse)
Concept: Enjoyment (bhoga) can be aligned with dharma so that action does not bind as pāpa when performed with proper rule and intention.
Vedantic Theme: Dharma
Application: Treat daily consumption as regulated karma: mindfulness, sharing, and offering before personal enjoyment.
Vishishtadvaita: Non-renunciation of life but consecration of acts—karma becomes non-binding when subordinated to the Lord’s order (śeṣatva-buddhi).
Vishnu Form: Para-Brahman
Bhakti Type: Shanta
This verse frames household enjoyment as permissible when governed by dharma, emphasizing that daily life can be spiritually safe when aligned with righteous discipline.
He introduces a method of regulated, dharma-guided enjoyment—implying that conduct, intention, and prescribed observances determine whether enjoyment binds one to sin.
Even when Vishnu is not named in the verse, the teaching reflects Vaishnava purāṇic worldview: dharma is part of the divine order sustained by the Supreme Reality, and living within it prevents karmic bondage.
