Discrimination of the Three Bodies and the Dharaṇī Vow: A Manual for Dvādaśī Observance
Pūrva Bhāga · Dharma-vrata (Observances) — Dharaṇī-vrata Phalaśruti

But the person who undertakes the Dharaṇī-vrata according to this procedure—listen, O best among the wise—attains an excellent fruit of merit.
Varāha
Right method (vidhi) is integral to right result (phala); dharma is efficacious when embodied as disciplined practice.
Follow the prescribed steps of the Dharaṇī-vrata carefully; treat Earth-supporting conduct as sacred duty.
Earth-centered vow is invoked (Dharaṇī-vrata), implying reverence toward Bhū as sacred support, though no direct interaction is narrated in this verse.
Varāha as the upholder of Dharaṇī frames the vow as aligning personal dharma with cosmic support of Earth—ethical action as participation in world-sustaining order (ṛta/dharma).
Implicit: ‘Dharaṇī’ as the supported Earth; the vow mirrors Varāha’s sustaining act, translating cosmic rescue into ritual-ethical maintenance.
Karma performed as dharma becomes a means of inner purification (citta-śuddhi), aligning the individual with the sustaining principle (Viṣṇu/Īśvara) that bears the world.
Undertake the Dharaṇī-vrata exactly according to the stated procedure to obtain its foremost merit.
Correct observance yields ‘agraya’ puṇya-phala; improper observance reduces or obstructs the promised fruit.
Excellent/foremost puṇya-phala (to be detailed in subsequent verses).
Varāha Purāṇa 39.39.57-58 (procedural preliminaries); Varāha Purāṇa 39.39.60-61 (rhetorical preface to fruits)
It functions as a transitional phalaśruti-style statement typical of Purāṇic composition, introducing the promised outcomes of a specific observance (Dharaṇī-vrata) and reflecting the text’s didactic framing of ethical-ritual practice.
No specific geographic location is named in this verse; it refers broadly to Dharaṇī (Earth) as the conceptual focus of the vow rather than a pilgrimage site.
The verse emphasizes disciplined adherence to a stated method (vidhi) and frames the observance as yielding commendable merit, encouraging conscientious practice oriented toward Dharaṇī (Earth) within the work’s broader Earth-restoration thematic.
