यथा जातरूपधरा निर्द्वन्द्वा निष्परिग्रहास्तत्त्वब्रह्ममार्गे सम्यक्सम्पन्नाः शुद्धमानसाः प्राणसन्धारणार्थं यथोक्तकाले विमुक्तो भैक्षमाचरन् उदरपात्रेण लाभालाभौ समौ भूत्वा करपात्रेण वा कमण्डलूदकपो भैक्षमाचरन् उदरमात्रसंग्रहः पात्रान्तरशून्यो जलस्थलकमण्डलुरबाधकरहःस्थलनिकेतनो लाभालाभौ समौ भूत्वा शून्यागारदेवगृहतृणकूटवल्मीकवृक्षमूलकुलालशालाग्निहोत्रशालानदीपुलिनगिरिकुहरकोटरकन्दरनिर्झरस्थण्डिलेष्वनिकेतनिवास्यप्रयत्नः शुभाशुभकर्मनिर्मूलनपरः संन्यासेन देहत्यागं करोति स परमहंसो नामेति ॥८॥

yathā jātarūpadharā nirdvandvā niṣparigrahās tattvabrahmamārge samyaksampannāḥ śuddhamānasāḥ prāṇasandhāraṇārthaṃ yathoktākāle vimukto bhaikṣam ācaran udarapātreṇa lābhālābhau samau bhūtvā karapātreṇa vā kamaṇḍalūdakapo bhaikṣam ācaran udaramātrasaṅgrahaḥ pātrāntaraśūnyo jalasthalakamaṇḍalur abādhakarahaḥsthalaniketano lābhālābhau samau bhūtvā śūnyāgāradevgṛhatṛṇakūṭaval mīka vṛkṣamūlakulālaśālāgnihotraśālānadīpulina girikuharakoṭarakandaranirjharasthaṇḍileṣv aniketanivāsy aprayatnaḥ śubhāśubhakarmanirmūlanaparaḥ saṃnyāsena dehatyāgaṃ karoti sa paramahaṃso nāmeti ||8||
As gold bears its form, so are they: free from the pairs of opposites, without possessions, rightly established on the path to the reality of Brahman, with purified mind. For the maintenance of the life-breath, at the proper time, released from attachment, they practice alms-seeking with the belly as the bowl, regarding gain and non-gain as equal; or they practice alms-seeking with the hand as the bowl, or drink water from the water-pot. They gather only what suffices for the belly, without any other vessel; having a water-pot for water on land and in water, dwelling in a solitary place that does not hinder others, regarding gain and non-gain as equal. Without a fixed abode they dwell in empty houses, temples, heaps of grass, anthills, at the root of trees, potters’ sheds, sacrificial halls, riverbanks, mountain caves, hollows, caverns, springs, and bare ground—without effort—intent on uprooting auspicious and inauspicious karma. By renunciation (sannyāsa) they relinquish the body; such a one is called a Paramahaṃsa.
