O Plant, protect thyself; O Axe, do not injure it!
Mantra 43
Do not thou scar the sky; do not injure the mid-air: from the earth be thou produced. For this axe, knowing thee, hath led thee forth for great good fortune. Therefore, O divine Lord of the Forest, grow thou again with a hundred shoots, grow thou again with a thousand shoots; and may we grow forth (in prosperity).
The three strides function as a ritual technology of measure: they ‘span’ and stabilize heaven, mid-space, and earth so the sacrifice proceeds through its stages in right order (ṛta) without collapse or deviation.
It aligns the sacrificer and priests with vayunā (right ordinance), ensuring that intention, cognition, and procedure cohere—so offerings and chants land correctly in the ritual sequence.
They close vulnerable transitions in the rite by placing guardians in the directions and safely releasing ritual byproducts, preserving purity and continuity as the Prātaḥsavana moves forward.
