O Lord of the lowly, O Maheśa—son of Śaṅkara—O Master of the three worlds, O Prabhu, Ruler over Māyā: I have come to You for refuge; protect me, O beloved of the brāhmaṇas. You are dear to all lords; You are praised by Brahmā and the all-knowing gods. Though You manifest as the Lord who wields Māyā, You grant bliss to Your own bhaktas, and as the wondrous Lord You are ever intent on protection.
Sanatkumara (contextual inference within Kumārakhaṇḍa: a hymn of supplication addressed to Kumāra/Skanda)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
Offering: dhupa
It expresses śaraṇāgati (total refuge) to the Lord who rules māyā yet compassionately protects and grants bliss to devotees—highlighting grace (anugraha) as the decisive force for spiritual safety and liberation in Shaiva understanding.
The prayer praises a personal, accessible Lord (saguṇa)—here addressed as Śaṅkara’s son—while affirming His supremacy over māyā; this aligns with Liṅga/Saguṇa worship where devotees approach the Divine through a form, receiving protection and inner joy as signs of grace.
A simple practice is repeated śaraṇāgati with japa—mentally offering oneself to Śiva and His divine family while chanting “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” followed by a prayer for rakṣā (protection) and steadiness in bhakti.
