Sukta 54

Mantra 1

एतत्त इन्द्र वीर्यं गीर्भिर्गृणन्ति कारवः । ते स्तोभन्त ऊर्जमावन्घृतश्चुतं पौरासो नक्षन्धीतिभिः ॥

This is your hero-force, O Indra, that the seers sing with their inspired words. They, chanting, win the nourishing energy that drips with clarified light; the ancient ones attain you by their luminous insights.

Mantra 2

नक्षन्त इन्द्रमवसे सुकृत्यया येषां सुतेषु मन्दसे । यथा संवर्ते अमदो यथा कृश एवास्मे इन्द्र मत्स्व ॥

They attain Indra for help by right action—those in whose pressed Soma you take delight. As you became intoxicated in the great turning, as in the lean time, so also in us, O Indra, be glad and pour your power.

Mantra 3

आ नो विश्वे सजोषसो देवासो गन्तनोप नः । वसवो रुद्रा अवसे न आ गमञ्छृण्वन्तु मरुतो हवम् ॥

Come to us, all you gods in one accord; draw near to us. Let the Vasus and the Rudras come for our help; let the Maruts hear our call.

Mantra 4

पूषा विष्णुर्हवनं मे सरस्वत्यवन्तु सप्त सिन्धवः । आपो वातः पर्वतासो वनस्पतिः शृणोतु पृथिवी हवम् ॥

May Pūṣan and Viṣṇu guard my offering-call; may Sarasvatī and the Seven Rivers support it. Let the Waters, the Wind, the Mountains, and the Lord of the Forest hear; let Earth hear the invocation.

Mantra 5

यदिन्द्र राधो अस्ति ते माघोनं मघवत्तम । तेन नो बोधि सधमाद्यो वृधे भगो दानाय वृत्रहन् ॥

If there is in you a wealth of grace, O Indra—most bountiful giver—then by that become awake to us, companion in the common delight; grow in us as Bhaga for the giving, O slayer of the Coverer.

Mantra 6

आजिपते नृपते त्वमिद्धि नो वाज आ वक्षि सुक्रतो । वीती होत्राभिरुत देववीतिभिः ससवांसो वि शृण्विरे ॥

O lord of the contest, O king of men, you indeed must carry us to the plenitude (vāja), O clear-intentioned one. With our offerings and with the god-led paths of offering, we who press forward are made widely heard.

Mantra 7

सन्ति ह्यर्य आशिष इन्द्र आयुर्जनानाम् । अस्मान्नक्षस्व मघवन्नुपावसे धुक्षस्व पिप्युषीमिषम् ॥

For there are indeed noble boons in Indra—life and the uplifting force for human beings. O Maghavan, lead us to the near help; pour out into us the growing plenitude of delighting nourishment (inner increase).

Mantra 8

वयं त इन्द्र स्तोमेभिर्विधेम त्वमस्माकं शतक्रतो । महि स्थूरं शशयं राधो अह्रयं प्रस्कण्वाय नि तोशय ॥

We would serve you, O Indra, with our hymns; you are ours, O hundred-powered Will. Settle down (establish) for Praskaṇva a great, solid, undiminishing abundance—make it rest in him as a secure possession.
