Sukta 101

Mantra 1

ऋधगित्था स मर्त्यः शशमे देवतातये । यो नूनं मित्रावरुणावभिष्टय आचक्रे हव्यदातये ॥

Truly, that mortal prospers in his own right who labors for the godhead; who even now has set Mitra and Varuṇa in front as his protectors, for the giving of the oblation.

Mantra 2

वर्षिष्ठक्षत्रा उरुचक्षसा नरा राजाना दीर्घश्रुत्तमा । ता बाहुता न दंसना रथर्यतः साकं सूर्यस्य रश्मिभिः ॥

Mighty in sovereignty, wide in vision—two men, two kings, most far-hearing: by their strong arms, by their powers, they move in their chariot-course together with the rays of the Sun.

Mantra 3

प्र यो वां मित्रावरुणाजिरो दूतो अद्रवत् । अयःशीर्षा मदेरघुः ॥

Forward runs the swift messenger of you, O Mitra and Varuṇa—iron-headed, moving lightly in the ecstasy; may this impulsion carry our will into the law of Truth.

Mantra 4

न यः सम्पृच्छे न पुनर्हवीतवे न संवादाय रमते । तस्मान्नो अद्य समृतेरुरुष्यतं बाहुभ्यां न उरुष्यतम् ॥

He who neither consults nor returns to call again, who takes no joy in true accord—save us today from that false joining; with your arms of power protect us, protect us.

Mantra 5

प्र मित्राय प्रार्यम्णे सचथ्यमृतावसो । वरूथ्यं वरुणे छन्द्यं वचः स्तोत्रं राजसु गायत ॥

Sing forth the companionable word to Mitra, sing forth to Aryaman, O keepers of Ṛta; and to Varuṇa chant the protecting, well-fashioned speech—your hymn among the kings of the powers.

Mantra 6

ते हिन्विरे अरुणं जेन्यं वस्वेकं पुत्रं तिसॄणाम् । ते धामान्यमृता मर्त्यानामदब्धा अभि चक्षते ॥

They impel the ruddy, conquering treasure—one son of the three (powers); the immortals, unfailing, look upon the stations of mortals and set them in right seeing.

Mantra 7

आ मे वचांस्युद्यता द्युमत्तमानि कर्त्वा । उभा यातं नासत्या सजोषसा प्रति हव्यानि वीतये ॥

Lift up my words—make them most luminous in their power of doing; come both of you, O Nāsatyas, in one glad consent, to receive the offerings for your enjoyment.

Mantra 8

रातिं यद्वामरक्षसं हवामहे युवाभ्यां वाजिनीवसू । प्राचीं होत्रां प्रतिरन्तावितं नरा गृणाना जमदग्निना ॥

When we call for your gift that is without harm, O you two rich in plenitude of force, then come, O heroes, advancing to the forward-leading priestly inspiration, as we sing—Jamadagni with us in the chant.

Mantra 9

आ नो यज्ञं दिविस्पृशं वायो याहि सुमन्मभिः । अन्तः पवित्र उपरि श्रीणानोऽयं शुक्रो अयामि ते ॥

Come, O Vāyu, to our sacrifice that touches heaven, with good-mindednesses; within the purifier, above, being clarified—this bright offering-stream I extend to you.

Mantra 10

वेत्यध्वर्युः पथिभी रजिष्ठैः प्रति हव्यानि वीतये । अधा नियुत्व उभयस्य नः पिब शुचिं सोमं गवाशिरम् ॥

The adhvaryu goes on the most straight paths to meet the offerings for your enjoyment; then, O yoked one, drink for us of both (worlds/portions) the pure Soma, mixed with the cow-essence—luminous nourishment of knowledge.

Mantra 11

बण्महाँ असि सूर्य बळादित्य महाँ असि । महस्ते सतो महिमा पनस्यतेऽद्धा देव महाँ असि ॥

Truly great art thou, O Sūrya; truly, O Āditya, great art thou. Great is thy real being; thy greatness is to be revered—indeed, O god, thou art great.

Mantra 12

बट् सूर्य श्रवसा महाँ असि सत्रा देव महाँ असि । मह्ना देवानामसुर्यः पुरोहितो विभु ज्योतिरदाभ्यम् ॥

Indeed, O Sūrya, by thy glory thou art great; continually, O god, thou art great. By thy greatness thou art the asurya power set in front of the gods—wide, invincible light that none can darken.

Mantra 13

इयं या नीच्यर्किणी रूपा रोहिण्या कृता । चित्रेव प्रत्यदर्श्यायत्यन्तर्दशसु बाहुषु ॥

This Power—seemingly lowered and hidden—yet radiant in its form, fashioned by the Red Force (Rohiṇī), appears again to the vision like a wonder, coming forth from within the ten arms (the full human instruments).

Mantra 14

प्रजा ह तिस्रो अत्यायमीयुर्न्यन्या अर्कमभितो विविश्रे । बृहद्ध तस्थौ भुवनेष्वन्तः पवमानो हरित आ विवेश ॥

Three births of the being move beyond the common limit; the others enter and settle around the ray of light. The Vast stands within the worlds; thus the self-purifying one enters with the green-golden energies.

Mantra 15

माता रुद्राणां दुहिता वसूनां स्वसादित्यानाममृतस्य नाभिः । प्र नु वोचं चिकितुषे जनाय मा गामनागामदितिं वधिष्ट ॥

Mother of the Rudras, daughter of the Vasus, sister of the Ādityas—navel of the Immortal: I declare her now to the discerning human being. Do not strike the Cow, the sinless Aditi (the infinite); do not wound the very source of immortality in you.

Mantra 16

वचोविदं वाचमुदीरयन्तीं विश्वाभिर्धीभिरुपतिष्ठमानाम् । देवीं देवेभ्यः पर्येयुषीं गामा मावृक्त मर्त्यो दभ्रचेताः ॥

The Cow who knows the Word, who raises the Word, who stands near with all the understandings—she, the Goddess moving among the gods: let not the small-minded mortal harm her or turn her away from us.
