Sukta 1.68
Parāśara (traditional for this Agni hymn cluster)
Agni
Triṣṭubh (likely; confirm)
This hymn praises Agni as the ever-awakening Fire who rises toward heaven, orders the paths of the moving and the fixed, and "opens out" the nights—making room for light, knowledge, and right action. It asks Agni, the conscious Knower and household lord, to widen the doors of plenitude (rāyas) for those who offer and those who seek instruction from him.
Mantra 1
Spreading himself, the eager one has stood up toward heaven; he has unfolded the moving course for what is fixed, and the nights he has opened out wide.
Mantra 2
When one divine Power becomes the encompassing One of all these gods—by greatness he surrounds and contains their workings.
Mantra 3
Then indeed all accept your will and discernment; for, O god, you were born living out of the dry (the inert), awakening life where it was barren.
Mantra 4
All share in the godhead and the Name, following the Truth; by their goings they arrive at immortality.
Mantra 5
The impulsion is of the Truth, the thought is of the Truth; the all-life—together with all the powers—has fashioned the works.
Mantra 6
Whoever offers to thee, or whoever seeks to learn from thee—unto him, O conscious Knower, grant the rayi, the plenitude of inner riches.
Mantra 7
The Hotṛ, seated within the offspring of Manu, becomes indeed the lord of those riches—master of the inner plenitudes in the human lineage.
Mantra 8
Seeking the creative seed within their bodies, they come to mutual understanding by their own right discernments—unbewildered, they consent to the true forming.
Mantra 9
As sons delight in a father’s will, so they cherish the intention; they who are swift to act listen to his ordinance and obey the guiding word.
Mantra 10
He opens wide the doors of plenitude; the much-dwelling power presses out the heaven of consciousness with his firm supports—master of the house within.
It presents Agni as the awakened fire and guiding intelligence who maintains cosmic order and opens the way to prosperity (rayi) for those who worship and those who sincerely learn.
These are poetic symbols for Agni’s power to expand space for light and understanding: he "opens" the darkness (night) and also the "doors" of abundance and well-being.
Triṣṭubh is the most likely meter for RV 1.68, but confirming it strictly requires checking each verse’s syllable count and cadence across all 10 mantras.
