Agni Vaiśvānara

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (11-syllable pādas, standard for many Agni hymns here)

This hymn praises Agni as Vaiśvānara—the universal fire in whom all other fires rejoice—and as the “navel” (central bond) of human settlements that holds people together in right order. It presents Agni as the inspired Hotṛ who carries ancient, mighty praises and offerings to the gods, granting strength, prosperity, and orderly life to the Bharadvāja lineage and to all peoples.

Mantras

Mantra 1

O Agni, truly all the other fires find their delight in thee, the one Immortal Fire. O Vaiśvānara, thou art the navel and central knot of the habitations; like a pillar thou holdest men together and leadest them to the measure and right order.

Mantra 2

Agni became the head of Heaven and the navel of Earth; then he stood as the active mover between the two worlds. The gods brought thee forth, O divine Vaiśvānara, a light indeed for the Aryan seeker.

Mantra 3

As rays in the Sun, stable and sure, the riches of the being are set in Vaiśvānara Agni. Whatever is in mountains, in plants, in the waters, and whatever is in men—of all that thou art the king.

Mantra 4

As the vast Two Worlds to their son, so the words come forth—Agni the Hotar, skilful like a man of perfect capacity. For the lord of the luminous world, for him of true force, the ancient mighty utterances surge toward Vaiśvānara, the most manly leader.

Mantra 5

Even beyond the vast heaven, O Jātavedas Vaiśvānara, thy greatness has overflowed. Thou art king of the human communities; by thy battle-force thou hast made a wide room and free passage for the gods.

Mantra 6

Now I proclaim the greatness of the Bull, whom the Pūrus follow as the slayer of obstruction. Vaiśvānara Agni, striking down the dasyu-force, shook loose the barriers and broke Śambara down.

Mantra 7

Vaiśvānara, by greatness the builder of all peoples, adorable among the Bharadvājas, the wide-shining. In the winning of hundreds with his hundredfold strengths, Agni grows old (endures) in many leadings, rich with true and happy speech.
