Sukta 149

Sukta 1.149

This brief hymn praises Agni as the lord of abundance who comes to the seat of wealth when the Soma is pressed, and whose radiant power kindles and “opens” the stronghold of being. Agni is celebrated as swift like a steed, luminous like the Sun, and as the dvijanman (twice-born) Hotṛ who distributes desirable riches and fame to the generous worshipper.

Mantras

Mantra 1

He, the lord, seeks the vast plenitude of spiritual riches; the strong one comes to the seat of the wealth. The pressing-stones strike near him as he flashes—awakening the force of the offering.

Mantra 2

He who is the Bull—manly in the two worlds—exists by his powers of luminous fame; he is the giver of the life-drink’s outflow. He who, streaming forth, has settled himself in the womb-source.

Mantra 3

He who has kindled the well-built stronghold; the steed, the seer, moving in the mid-air, not sinking—like the Sun blazing forth, hundred-souled: he awakens the fortress of the being into light.

Mantra 4

The Twice-born Flame, growing ever more luminous, has stood up embracing the three realms of light and all the worlds. As the most perfect priest of the offering, he is established in the common seat of the Waters—within the deep foundation of our being.

Mantra 5

This is that Invoking Priest, the Twice-born, who holds and disposes all desirable riches of the soul and the powers that build true fame. The mortal who gives to him with a glad and willing offering, to that one he responds with plenitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Agni, the Vedic Fire—invoking priest (Hotṛ) and divine messenger who carries offerings and awakens light and power.

The pressing-stones (adrayaḥ) signal the Soma-pressing rite; their sound marks the ritual moment when Agni is invited to energize and accept the offering.

It points to Agni’s repeated birth: kindled again in the ritual fire and also born in the cosmic order—symbolically, the inner flame reawakened in the practitioner.
