The Uttar Kāṇḍa, taking Śānta as its principal rasa, unfolds into bhakti-śṛṅgāra (the beauty of Rāma and Sītā), dāsya (the saving of the servant), and an instructive voice of nīti/dharma. This section begins with the citizens’ praise of Rāma’s virtues (loka-dharma), and then portrays Rāma’s pratāpa through the metaphor of “Dineśa” (the Sun): the destruction of the night of avidyā, the shrinking of kāma and krodha, and the blooming of the lotus of jñāna in the lake of dharma. Then the arrival of Sanakādi and their hymn-prayer strengthens the nirguṇa–saguṇa harmony—“Ananta Anāmaya” alongside “Indirāramana.” Finally, under the pretext of Bharata’s question, a lineage of marks of the saint and the non-saint is given, turning the narrative into an instrument of social instruction and the seeker’s self-examination. In this way the Uttar Kāṇḍa, while granting the “fruit” of līlā, also frames a lasting ordinance for sādhana.

Here and there the people sang the praises of the Lord of the Raghus, and sitting together they taught one another this: "Worship Rama, the protector of those who bow before him, the abode of beauty, good character, comeliness and virtue, the lotus-eyed, the dark-bodied, who protects his servants as the eyelid protects the eye, who bears arrows, a lovely bow and a quiver, who is steadfast in battle, and who is a sun to the lotus-grove of the saints, a Garuda, king of birds, against the dreadful serpent Death; Rama, who destroys the selfish attachment of those who bow to him without desire, a hunter against the herd of deer that are greed and delusion, a lion against the elephant of Love, and the giver of happiness to his people, a sun against the thick darkness of doubt and sorrow, and a fire to burn the dense forest of demons. Why do you not worship the Hero of the Raghus together with Sita, the daughter of Janaka, who destroys the fear of worldly existence, who is frost to the swarm of gnats that are manifold desires, ever the same in nature, unborn and imperishable, the delight of the sages, the remover of the earth's burden, the generous Lord of Tulsidas?"

O lord of birds, from the time that the glory of Rama arose like a mighty sun of exceeding power, its light filled all three worlds. Many were made happy by it, and many were sorrowful at heart. I will tell you in detail of those who were sorrowful. First, the night of ignorance came to an end. Sin, like the owl, hid itself here and there; lust and anger, like the night lotuses, closed up in shame. The many kinds of action, the qualities, time and temperament: these, like the chakora birds, never find happiness. Envy, pride, delusion and arrogance are like thieves; their skill finds no scope in any direction. Righteousness is the pond, and knowledge and realization are the lotuses, which have blossomed in many ways. Happiness, contentment, detachment and discrimination are like countless chakwa birds, freed from their sorrow.

One day Rama, together with his brothers, and with Hanuman, the son of the Wind, who was supremely dear to him, in his company, went to see a beautiful garden, where every tree was in bloom and thick with new leaves. Knowing it to be the right time, Sanaka and his brothers came there, masses of radiance, graced with virtue and good character. They were ever absorbed in the bliss of Brahman, and though they had lived for ages, they looked like boys. They seemed the four Vedas themselves in bodily form, sages who looked on all alike and were free from every distinction. Their only hope, their dress, and their one passion was this: wherever the deeds of the Lord of the Raghus were recounted, they would go and listen. O Bhavani, Sanaka and his brothers had stayed in the place where the wise and eminent sage, born of a pitcher, Agastya, dwelt. That best of sages told at length the story of Rama, which is the source of wisdom, as the arani wood is the source of fire.

The three brothers also prostrated themselves, together with the son of the Wind, and their joy was great. The sages beheld the incomparable beauty of the Lord of the Raghus and became absorbed in it; they could not restrain their minds. His body was dark, his eyes were like lotuses; he was a temple of beauty and the liberator from worldly existence. They stood gazing with unwavering eyes and did not blink; they folded their hands and bowed their heads to the Lord. Seeing their state, Raghubira's eyes streamed with tears and the hair on his body stood on end. The Lord took the foremost of the sages by the hand and seated them, and spoke words of the utmost charm. "Listen, lords of the sages: today I am blessed. At the sight of you, sins are destroyed and wasted away." "By great good fortune one obtains the company of the saints; through it, and without any effort, the bonds of worldly existence are broken."

Glory to the Lord of Indira, glory to the supporter of the earth; peerless, unborn, without beginning, the mine of splendor. Treasury of knowledge, free from pride, who bestow honor on others, whose pure and glorious fame the Puranas and the Vedas proclaim. All-knowing, grateful for what is done for you, destroyer of ignorance; you bear many names, yet you are nameless and untainted. You are all, present in all, the dwelling place within every heart; you dwell always in us; protect us. Shatter the pairs of opposites, the calamities and the snares of worldly existence; dwelling in our hearts, O Rama, crush lust and pride.

You are the wish-granting cow and the wish-fulfilling tree for those who bow before you. Be pleased, O Lord, and grant us this boon. O Leader of the Raghus, you are the Agastya who drank up the ocean of worldly existence; easily attained by those who serve you, you are the giver of every joy. You tear away the dreadful sufferings born of the mind's desire. Friend of the lowly, you spread equanimity everywhere. You ward off hope, fear, envy and the like, and you spread humility, discernment and detachment. You are the crest jewel of kings and the adornment of the earth. Grant us devotion, the boat for crossing the river of worldly life. You are the swan ever dwelling in the Manasa lake of the sages' hearts, and your lotus feet are worshipped by Brahma and Shankara. You are the banner of the house of Raghu, the bridge and guardian of the Vedas, and the devourer of time, action, nature and the qualities. You are the one who ferries across, the boat itself, and the remover of every fault. Lord of Tulsidas, you are the ornament of the three worlds.

They wished to hear the words from the Lord's own mouth, by hearing which all their confusion would be destroyed. The Lord, who knows every heart, understood everything, and asked, "Tell me, Hanuman, what is it?" Then Hanuman folded his hands and said, "Listen, O Lord, merciful to the humble, O blessed Lord. Master, Bharata wishes to ask something, but his mind hesitates to put the question." "Hanuman, you know my nature. Is there ever any distance between Bharata and me?" Hearing the Lord's words, Bharata clasped his feet and said, "Listen, my Lord, remover of the suffering of those who bow to you.

O Treasury of mercy, I make one bold request: I am your servant, and you give happiness to your devotees. O Lord of the Raghus, the Vedas and the Puranas have sung the greatness of the saints in many ways. You too have praised them with your own blessed mouth, and the Lord has a special love for them. Lord, I wish to hear their marks, O Ocean of mercy, skilled in discerning virtue and wisdom. Explain to me clearly, O Protector of the suppliant, the difference between the saint and the wicked. Listen, brother, to the marks of the saints, which are beyond counting and renowned in the Vedas and Puranas. Such is the conduct of saints and of the wicked: like the behavior of the axe and the sandalwood tree. Listen, brother: the axe cuts the sandalwood of Malaya, yet the tree gives it its own quality and fills it with fragrance.

They are not greedy for the objects of the senses, and are mines of good character and virtue. They grieve at the sorrow of others and rejoice at the happiness of others. They are even-minded, and no creature is their enemy; they are free from pride and from worldly passion, and they have renounced greed, anger, joy and fear. Their hearts are tender, they show compassion to the poor, and their devotion to me is guileless in thought, word and deed. They give honor to all, while they themselves seek no honor. Bharata, such people are as dear to me as my own life. They are free from desire and wholly devoted to my name; they are abodes of tranquillity, detachment, humility and joy. They possess coolness of temper, simplicity and friendliness, and love for the feet of the Brahmans, which is the mother of righteousness. Dear brother, know that one in whose heart all these marks dwell is truly and always a saint. They never waver from calmness, self-control, religious observances and right conduct, and they never speak a harsh word.

Listen now to the nature of the wicked: never, even by mistake, should one keep their company. Their company always brings sorrow, as a vicious cow ruins a good cow by joining its herd. In the hearts of the wicked there is an exceedingly fierce burning; they always burn at the sight of another's prosperity. Wherever they hear another being slandered, they rejoice as though they had found a treasure lying on the road. They are given over to lust, anger, pride and greed; they are merciless, deceitful and crooked, a very house of impurity. They bear enmity without cause toward everyone, and even toward the one who does them good they act as an enemy. False is their taking and false is their giving; false is their meal, and false even their light snack. Like the peacock, they speak sweet words, yet they devour the deadliest of snakes; so too they are utterly hard of heart.
Doha 39

They are hostile to others, addicted to other men's wives, greedy for others' wealth, and given to slandering others. Such men are wretched, full of sin; they are demons who have taken on human bodies.
