The prevailing rasa of this section is ānanda/śānta, with a confluence of adbhuta and bhakti. From Kaikeyī’s awakening of shame to Rāma’s enthronement, the narrative transforms the outer coronation of the kingdom into an inner “coronation of the heart”: the untying of matted locks, the bath, divine garments, Vedic hymns, the gods’ resounding drums, and the jubilant cry of the sages create within the seeker a festival of saguṇa-prākaṭya. Thereafter, through the Veda-stuti and Śambhu-stuti, the principle of nirguṇa–saguṇa unity is established: Rāma is the incomparable form of both saguṇa and nirguṇa. Then the phalaśruti tells the reader that this कथा is a healing medicine that burns away the “threefold afflictions” and the fear of bhava. At the end, the farewell of the monkey-friends and Aṅgada’s humility reveal the summit of dāsya-sakhya: even after the attainment of sovereignty, bhakti’s meekness—this is Uttar Kāṇḍa’s inner dharma.

The Lord knew that Kaikeyi was ashamed, and so, O Bhavani, he went first to her house. Having comforted her, he gave her great happiness; then Hari went to his own palace. When the ocean of mercy had entered his palace, all the men and women of the city became happy. The guru Vasishtha called the Brahmans together and said: "This hour is most auspicious, and the day is most fair." "O Brahmans, all of you, gladly give your order that Ramachandra take his seat upon the throne." The pleasing words of the sage Vasishtha, when they heard them, were very welcome to all the Brahmans. Many of the Brahmans spoke gentle words: "The anointing of Rama is a delight to the whole world." "Now, best of sages, do not delay; apply the mark of sovereignty to the Maharaja."

The city of Ayodhya was adorned most beautifully, and the gods sent down a continuous shower of flowers. Rama called his servants and said, "Go and first bathe my friends." On hearing his words the attendants ran in every direction, and quickly had Sugriva and the others bathed. Then Rama, the treasury of compassion, summoned Bharata, and with his own hands untied and combed out Bharata's matted locks. The Lord, the compassionate Lord of the Raghus, who is tender to his devotees, had all three of his brothers bathed. Bharata's good fortune and the Lord's tenderness: even a hundred crores of Sheshas could not sing them. Then Rama loosed his own matted locks, and after asking his guru's permission, he bathed. After bathing, the Lord put on his ornaments; seeing his limbs, hundreds of Kamadevas were put to shame.

The mothers-in-law reverently had Janaki bathed at once, and adorned each limb of hers with fine heavenly garments and splendid ornaments. On Rama's left side shone Lakshmi, a mine of beauty and virtue. Seeing her, all the mothers rejoiced, deeming their own lives fulfilled. Listen, Garuda, lord of birds: at that time Brahma, Shiva, and hosts of sages, and all the gods, came in their celestial chariots to see the Lord, the fountain of bliss.

Beholding the Lord, the sage's heart was filled with love, and he at once called for a divine throne. His splendor was like the sun's, beyond all description. Rama bowed his head to the Brahmans and sat down. Seeing the Lord of the Raghus together with Sita, the daughter of Janaka, the whole company of sages rejoiced greatly. Then the Brahmans recited the Vedic mantras, and in the sky the gods and sages cried out, "Victory, victory!" First the sage Vasishtha applied the tilak, and then he gave the Brahmans leave to do the same. The mothers rejoiced to see their son, and again and again they waved the lamp of aarti before him. Rama gave gifts of many kinds to the Brahmans, and made every beggar free of want. Seeing the Lord of the three worlds seated on the throne, the gods beat their kettledrums.

In the sky countless kettledrums sounded, and the Gandharvas and Kinnaras sang. Troops of celestial nymphs danced, and the gods and sages were filled with supreme bliss. Bharata and the other brothers, together with Vibhishana, Angada, Hanuman and the rest, stood resplendent, holding umbrellas, whisks and fans, and bows, swords, shields and spears. With Sita beside him, the jewel of the Solar line shone with the beauty of many gods of love. His fair form, dark like a fresh rain cloud, clad in yellow garments, enchanted the minds of the gods. Crown, armlets and other wondrous ornaments adorned each of his limbs. With his lotus eyes, broad chest and mighty arms, blessed are the men who behold him.

That splendor, that assembly and its joy cannot be told, O king of birds. Saraswati, Shesha and the Vedas try to describe it, but only Mahesha knows the sweetness of that delight. After praising him each in his own way, the gods departed to their own abodes. Then the Vedas, in the guise of bards, came to where Sri Rama was. The all-knowing Lord, the abode of compassion, received them with great honor. No one perceived any of the secret, and the Vedas began to sing his praises.

Glory to you, whose form is both with attributes and without them, matchless in beauty, crown jewel of kings, who by the might of your arms slew Ravana and the other fierce demons, mighty and wicked. Taking birth as a man, you shattered the burden of the world and burned away its terrible sorrows. Glory to you, protector of those who bow to you, compassionate Lord; we bow to you together with your Shakti. O Hari, gods and demons, Nagas and men, all things moving and unmoving are held in the grip of your inscrutable Maya, and they wander day and night for countless ages along the path of worldly existence, laden with time, karma and the qualities of nature. Those on whom you, O Lord, have looked with compassion are freed from the threefold sorrow. O Rama, skilled in cutting away the weariness of worldly existence, protect us; we bow to you. Those who, drunk with pride in their knowledge, have not honoured devotion to you, which takes away worldly existence, may reach a station hard even for the gods to win, yet we see them fall from it, O Hari. Those who, in firm faith, have given up every other hope and remain your servants cross the ocean of existence without effort by repeating your name. O Lord, it is you whom we remember. Those feet which are worshipped by Shiva and Brahma, whose auspicious dust the sage's wife touched and was saved; from whose nails came forth the river of the gods, revered by the sages, which purifies the three worlds; Marked with the banner, the thunderbolt, the goad and the lotus, and bearing the calluses left by thorns as they wandered through the forest: those two lotus feet of yours, O Mukunda, Rama, Lord of Lakshmi, we worship always. The beginningless tree whose root is the unmanifest, whose bark is fourfold, as the Vedas and the scriptures declare, with six trunks and twenty-five branches, countless leaves and abundant flowers; Bearing two kinds of fruit, bitter and sweet, with a single creeper clinging to it, ever putting forth fresh leaves and blossoms: to you, the tree of the world, we bow. Let those who meditate on the Brahman, unborn, without a second, known only by experience and beyond the mind, speak of it and know it as they will; but we, O Lord, shall forever sing the glory of your form with attributes. O Lord, abode of compassion, mine of all virtues, O God, this is the boon we ask: that, casting off every perversion of mind, speech and deed, we may love your feet.

Glory to Rama, the delight of Lakshmi, the giver of peace! Protect your servant, distraught with fear of the torments of worldly existence. Lord of Avadh, lord of the gods, lord of Lakshmi, all-pervading one, protect me, Lord. I have come to you for refuge and I beg of you. Destroyer of the ten-headed one with his twenty arms, you have taken away the great and heavy affliction of the earth. The hosts of demons were like moths, and they were burned up in the fierce fiery blaze of your arrows. Most lovely ornament of the whole earth, you bear arrows, a bow and a splendid quiver. To the night of pride, delusion and great possessiveness, with its dense mass of darkness, you are the sun with its host of radiant beams. Kama, the mind-born hunter, has struck people down like deer, piercing their hearts with the arrows of evil pleasures. Slay him, Lord, and protect the helpless, O Hari, wretched creatures who have lost their way and fallen into the forest of the senses. People are struck down by many diseases and many separations; these are the fruits of disregarding your feet. Those men have fallen into the fathomless ocean of worldly existence who do not love your lotus feet. Utterly wretched, impure and forever unhappy are those who have no love for your lotus feet. Those whose support is your story hold the saints and the infinite Lord ever dear. They have no attachment, no greed, no pride and no arrogance; to them prosperity and adversity are alike. This is why your servants live in joy; the sage gives up forever all reliance on yoga. With love, keeping their vow without ceasing, they serve your lotus feet with a pure heart. Counting disrespect and respect alike, all the saints wander the earth in happiness. I worship you, the bee in the lotus of the sages' hearts, O hero of the Raghus, great and steadfast in battle, unconquered. I repeat your name and bow to you, O Hari, the great remedy for the disease of worldly existence and the enemy of pride. Supreme abode of virtue, goodness and compassion, I bow without ceasing to the Lord of Lakshmi. O delight of the Raghus, destroy the host of the pairs of opposites; O protector of the earth, look upon this humble servant.

Listen, Garuda, lord of birds: this sacred story destroys the threefold affliction and the fear of worldly existence. Those who hear of the auspicious coronation of the great King obtain detachment and discernment. Those men who hear it or sing it with desires in their hearts obtain happiness and wealth of many kinds. Having enjoyed in this world such happiness as the gods can hardly obtain, at the last hour they go to the city of the Lord of the Raghus. The liberated, the dispassionate and the worldly who hear it obtain, respectively, devotion, the final state, and ever new prosperity. Garuda, lord of birds, I have told the story of Rama as my own understanding delighted in it; it removes terror and sorrow. It makes detachment, discernment and devotion firm, and is a beautiful boat for crossing the river of delusion. In the city of Kosala there was fresh joy every day, and all the people lived in gladness, the whole multitude of them. Everyone's love for the lotus feet of Rama grew new each day, those feet before which Shiva, the sages and Brahma bow. The beggars were clothed in many ways, and the Brahmans received gifts of many kinds.

All the monkeys were immersed in a bliss like that of Brahman, for each of them held love for the Lord's feet. They did not notice the days go by, and six months passed away.

They forgot their homes so completely that not even in a dream did any thought of them come, just as the thought of harming others never enters the mind of a saint. Then the Lord of the Raghus called all his friends. They came and bowed their heads before him with reverence. With the greatest affection he seated them near him, and spoke gentle words that give joy to his devotees. "You have rendered me very great service. How can I praise you to your face?" "For this reason you have become exceedingly dear to me, because for my sake you gave up the comforts of your homes." "Brother, kingdom, wealth, Sita, body, home, and loving kinsfolk:" "all these are dear to me, yet none is equal to you. I do not speak falsely; this is my way." "It is the rule that servants are dear to everyone, but in my case the love for a servant is greater still."

Hearing the Lord's words, they all became absorbed; who they were and where they were, they forgot, even their own bodies. With folded hands they stood before him gazing fixedly, and overcome with love they could say nothing. The Lord saw their supreme love, and taught them in many ways the special knowledge. Before the Lord they could not speak a word, but gazed again and again at his lotus feet. Then the Lord had ornaments and garments brought, of many colors, incomparable and beautiful. First they were put on Sugriva: Bharata with his own hands had arranged the garments. At the Lord's bidding Lakshmana clothed the lord of Lanka, who was pleasing to the heart of Rama. Angada remained seated and did not stir; seeing his love, the Lord did not call him.

Listen, O all-knowing One, ocean of grace and joy, compassionate to the poor, friend of the afflicted. At the time of his death, O Lord, Bali placed me in your lap and went. Remember your title as the refuge of the refugeless, and do not abandon me, O benefactor of your devotees. For me you are lord, teacher, father and mother. Leaving your lotus feet, where shall I go? Consider it yourself and tell me, O king of men: if I leave my Lord, what business have I with a home? I am a child, without knowledge, wisdom or strength. Keep me under your protection, O Lord, a humble servant. I will do all the lowliest service of your household, and by beholding your lotus feet I will cross the ocean of worldly existence. So saying, he fell at the Lord's feet: "O Lord, do not now tell me to go home."

Hearing Angada's humble words, Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, the very limit of compassion, raised him up and clasped him to his breast, his lotus eyes full of tears. Then the Lord clothed the son of Bali with the garland from his own breast, with his own garment and jewels, and sent him on his way, comforting him in many ways.

Bharata, together with his younger brother Shatrughna and with Lakshmana, set out to escort them on their way, their hearts moved by the devotion the monkeys had shown. Angada's heart held no small love; again and again he turned to look toward Rama. Again and again he bowed down in full prostration, and in his heart he said, 'Would that Rama would tell me to stay here.' Remembering again and again Rama's glance, his speech, his gait, his smile and his embrace, he grieved. Judging the Lord's wish by his look, he spoke many words of humble entreaty, and departed with the Lord's lotus feet kept in his heart. With great honor Bharata escorted all the monkeys on their way, and then returned with his brothers. Then Hanuman clasped Sugriva's feet and made many kinds of humble entreaty. 'Lord, after I have served the feet of the Raghu's Lord for ten days, I will come again to see your feet.' 'You, son of the Wind, are a very storehouse of merit; go and serve that abode of mercy.' So saying, all the monkeys quickly departed. Angada said, 'Listen, Hanuman.'

Offer my prostration to the Lord; with folded hands I ask this of you. Again and again remind the Lord of the Raghus of me. So saying, the son of Bali went on his way, and Hanuman turned back. When he told the Lord of Angada's love, the Blessed Lord was filled with rapture. Harder than the thunderbolt, and softer than a flower: O king of birds, who can fathom the heart of Rama?
