Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa’s chief rasa is karuṇā, yet this compassion is not mere grief—it is the compassion of dharma’s decision (dharma-nirṇaya). In this section, against Kaikeyī’s bitterness (the seed of raudra), stands Daśaratha’s vow to truth (dharma-dhīratā); thus a fierce conjunction of karuṇā and raudra arises. Daśaratha as satyasaṅdha—the establishment of rāja-dharma—and at the same time his deep attachment to Rāma—the human face of bhakti—both resound together. Tulasī’s dharmaśāstric architecture is clear: a promise (satya) is a yajña, and its keeping is tapas—even if life must be given. By this the narrative-step rises: Ayodhyā’s auspicious celebration becomes inwardly a journey into vairāgya. This section teaches the sādhaka that the hardest rung on the ladder to liberation is not “separation from the beloved,” but the abandonment of ego-delusion (ahaṃ-moha) and voluntary self-offering for the sake of truth.

In this way the king burned inwardly, in his own heart, and the wicked-minded Kaikeyi, seeing his wretched state, was filled with spite. Is Bharata not your son as well? Or did you bring me home as a slave, bought for a price? If my words have pierced you like an arrow when you heard them, why did you not speak with care and keep your word? Give me an answer: will you do it or not? You are known as one true to his word in the line of the Raghus. You promised to give the boon; now do not give it. Abandon truth and take on disgrace in the world. You praised truth and said you would grant the boon, thinking I would ask only for a handful of parched grain. Whatever Shibi, Dadhichi and Bali promised, they gave up their bodies and wealth and kept their word and vow. Kaikeyi spoke exceedingly bitter words, as if she were rubbing salt on a burn.

He saw her before him, burning with great anger, as if wrath itself were a naked sword. Its hilt was her evil counsel and its edge was cruelty, and the Humpback had set it and whetted it on her grindstone. The king saw her, fierce and harsh, and thought: "Will she truly take my life?" Steeling his heart, the king spoke in humble words, such as would please her. "Beloved, why do you speak such words, and in so wicked a way? They destroy the trust of the people and the love between us." "To me Bharata and Rama are like my two eyes. I tell you the truth, taking Shankara as my witness." "At dawn I will surely send a messenger, and the two brothers will come quickly as soon as they hear." "Having chosen an auspicious day and made all the preparations, I will proclaim it with festive music and give Bharata the kingdom."

I swear by Rama and tell you the truth as it is: Rama's mother never said anything to me at any time. I did all this without asking you, and for that reason my plan has come to nothing. Now put away your anger and make ready the auspicious festivities. When a few days have passed, Bharata will be the crown prince. Only one thing pained me: the second boon you asked for was unreasonable and unfitting. Even now your heart burns with the heat of that fire. Is it anger, or a jest, or is it really true? Give up your wrath and tell me Rama's offence. Everyone says that Rama is exceedingly gentle and good. You too used to praise him and show him affection. Now, having heard this from you, I am filled with doubt. He whose nature is kind even to an enemy, how could he act unkindly toward his mother?

A fish may perhaps live without water, and a serpent, miserable and wretched, may live without its jewel. I tell you my true nature, with no deceit in my heart: my life is nothing without Rama. Consider it in your heart, my clever beloved: my life depends on the sight of Rama. Hearing these gentle words, the wicked-minded Kaikeyi burned fiercely, as though ghee had been poured as an offering on a fire. She said, "Why not try ten million devices? Your tricks will have no hold on me here. Either grant it, or refuse and bear the disgrace. I do not like long-drawn schemes. Rama is good, and you are good and wise, and Rama's mother too, as everyone has found, is good. As Kausalya has looked to my harm, so I will give her the fruit of it, making her pay in kind."

Having spoken thus, the crooked Kaikeyi rose and stood up, as if a river of wrath were in flood. That river had risen out of the mountain of sin, and it was full to the brim with the water of anger, so that no one could look upon it. The two boons were its banks, her harsh obstinacy was its current, and the words of the hunchback Manthara, spreading her counsel, were its whirlpools. Tearing down the king, who was like a tree, from its roots, it flowed on toward the ocean of calamity. The king saw that her words were true and in earnest, and that death, in the guise of a woman, was dancing over his head. Clasping her feet, he pleaded with her and made her sit down: "Do not become an axe to the race of the Sun." "Ask for my head, and I will give it to you this very moment; but do not kill me with separation from Rama." "Keep Rama here by whatever means you can; otherwise your heart will burn all your life long."

"Can two things happen at one time, O king? You cannot laugh heartily and at the same time puff out your cheeks in sulking." "Can you be called a generous giver and also be a miser? Can a man be a king and live in safety and comfort at once?" "Either abandon your word or keep your courage. Do not show pity like a weak woman." Bharata never even dreamed of desiring the kingship; it is only by the force of fate that evil counsel has settled in your heart. All this is the fruit of my own sins, because of which Providence has turned against me at so unfit a time and place. Fair Ayodhya will again dwell in prosperity and peace, under the sovereignty of Rama, the abode of every virtue. All his brothers will serve him, and Rama's glory will be proclaimed throughout the three worlds. But your disgrace and my remorse will not be wiped away even after we are dead; they will never go. Now do whatever seems good to you; sit out of my sight, with your face hidden. With folded hands I say it: as long as I live, do not speak a word to me again. You unfortunate woman, you will repent in the end, for you are killing a cow for the sake of its sinews.

The king, distraught, kept crying out "Rama, Rama," like a bird without wings, helpless and wretched. In his heart he prayed that morning might not come, and that no one might go and tell Rama. "O Sun, preceptor of the house of Raghu, do not rise; when you look on Ayodhya, a pang will pierce your heart." The king's love and Kaikeyi's cruelty: Brahma had fashioned each of them as the very utmost of its kind. While the king was still lamenting, day broke, and the sound of lutes, flutes and conches rose at his gate. The bards recited and the singers sang his praises, but to the king, as he heard them, they seemed to strike like arrows. None of the auspicious preparations gave him any pleasure, just as ornaments give none to a woman about to die with her husband on his pyre. That night no one had slept, for their longing and eager joy at the thought of seeing Rama.

The king has always woken in the last watch of the night; today it strikes us as very strange. Go, Sumantra, and wake him, so that we may do our work once we have the king's command. Then Sumantra went into the palace, but its dreadful look filled him with fear as he went along. It seemed as though it would rush upon him and devour him, and he could not bear to look at it; it seemed the very dwelling of calamity and sorrow. He asked, but no one gave him an answer, and he came to the chamber where the king and Kaikeyi were. Saying "Victory and long life!" he bowed his head and sat down; but when he saw the king's condition, he withered with dismay. Distraught with anxiety and drained of colour, the king lay fallen on the ground, like a lotus torn away from its root. The minister, afraid, could not ask a question; then she spoke, full of ill omen and empty of all good.

"Call Rama and bring him here quickly; then you may come and ask the king what has happened." Sumantra set out, having understood the king's wish; he saw that the queen had done some evil scheming. Distraught with anxiety, his feet could scarcely find the path: "When the king has called Rama, what will he say to him?" Holding firm his courage in his heart, he reached the gate. All who saw him downcast asked what was the matter. He satisfied them all with an answer and went to where the jewel of the Sun's line, Rama, was. Rama saw Sumantra coming and received him with respect, regarding him as equal to his father. Looking Rama in the face, Sumantra delivered the king's command and set out, leading the lamp of the Raghu line with him. Seeing Rama go with the minister in such an unseemly state, the people here and there began to lament.

The jewel of the Raghu line went and saw the king in a most wretched state, utterly unfit for the occasion. At the sight of Kaikeyi, the lioness, the king shrank back and fell, like an aged king of elephants.
