Prakarana 31

In this segmented episode (Dohā 300–309), within the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa’s karuṇā, there arises the dawn of śānta-bhakti. Bharata’s humility, sense of fault, and language of master-and-servant duty purify dāsya; while Rāma’s reply—through polity, public propriety, the Guru and the assembly of elders, care of subjects, and situational dharma—establishes maryādā as a dharma-principle. Tulsī does not let emotional compassion remain mere weeping; he transforms it into discernment-supported surrender. By showing Indra (Maghavā) attempting deceit through deva-māyā, he also teaches that within outward goodwill, self-interest and fraud may hide; therefore true bhakti abandons “the four fruits of selfish cunning” and abides in obedience to the divine command. In this way, within the staircase-sequence of the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa, the seeker is raised from “the ethics of renunciation” to “the maturity of devotion.”

Whether out of grief and affection or out of a child's nature, I came here setting aside your command and putting it to one side. Even so, the Merciful One turned his gaze upon me as his own, and in every way took what I did as good. I have seen your feet, the root of all auspiciousness, and I have known my master to be naturally kind to me. In this great assembly I have beheld my good fortune: my fault is great, but my master's love is greater. The Treasury of Mercy, by his kindness and favor, has filled my every limb to satisfaction, and has done everything in abundance. My Lord has cherished my fondness, out of the goodness of his own gentle nature. O Lord, I have shown utter boldness, casting aside all hesitation before my master and this assembly. In my words, whether rude or humble, I have spoken as I pleased; may my Lord forgive me, knowing how deep is my distress.

I swear by the dust of my Lord's lotus feet, that fair boundary of truth, virtue and happiness. Taking that oath, I tell you what is in my own heart: the longing that is mine, waking, sleeping and even in dreams. It is to serve my master out of natural love, leaving aside self-interest, deceit, and the four fruits of life. There is no service of a good master equal to obeying his command. O Lord, let your servant receive that grace. Having said this, he was greatly overcome by love; his body thrilled and his eyes filled with tears. In his agitation he clasped the lotus feet of the Lord. The moment and his love cannot be described. The Ocean of Compassion honoured him with kind words, took him by the hand and seated him near. Hearing Bharata's plea and seeing his nature, the Lord of the Raghus and the whole assembly were faint with love.

The Lord of the Raghus was faint with love, and so were the assembly of saints, the sages, and the king of Mithila; in their hearts they praised the greatness of Bharata's brotherly affection and devotion. The gods praised Bharata and rained down flowers, though their minds were clouded and troubled. Tulsidas says that all the people were distressed at what they heard, and drew back like lotuses at the coming of night.

The king of the gods is the very boundary of deceit and evil scheming; he loves his own advantage and delights in the harm of others. The foe of Paka has ways like those of a crow: sly, foul of heart, and trusted nowhere. First he devised an evil plan and gathered up his deceit together, and then he hurled that distraction down upon the heads of all. All the people were bewildered by the illusion of the gods; yet because their love for Rama was so great, they were not made to part from him. Held by fear and restlessness, their minds were nowhere steady: one moment the forest pleased them, and the next moment home. The people, torn in two by the movement of their minds, were wretched, like the water where a river meets the sea. Divided in mind, they found contentment nowhere, and none of them told another the secret of his heart. Seeing this, the Lord, the treasury of compassion, smiled in his heart and said: Indra, the young lord of wealth, is just like a dog.

The Ocean of Compassion saw the people distressed, weighed down both by their own love and by the deceptions of Indra, the lord of the gods. The assembly, the king, the guru, the Brahmans and the ministers: the devotion of Bharata had made the mind of each one like an instrument held in its hand to play upon. They gazed at Rama as if they were figures painted in a picture, and hesitating, spoke words that seemed to be learned by rote. Bharata's love, his humility, his lowliness and his greatness are a joy to hear, but hard to describe. Seeing even a tiny fraction of his devotion, the hosts of sages and the king of Mithila were plunged in love. How then can Tulsidas tell his greatness? It is only by the natural gift of devotion that the good understanding in my heart has been moved to delight. My understanding, knowing itself small and his greatness vast, grew shy, and shrank back in awe of the whole company of poets. It cannot tell his virtues, nor the abundance of its own longing; the movement of my mind is like the speech of a child.

Bharata's nature is not easy to fathom even for the Vedas; poets, forgive the rashness of my small understanding. Who, in telling or hearing of Bharata's true devotion, would not become devoted to the feet of Sita and Rama? Who is as perverse as the one for whom love of Rama does not come easily, even while remembering Bharata? Seeing the plight of everyone there, the compassionate and wise Rama, who knows what is in the hearts of his devotees, the bearer of the burden of righteousness, steadfast, skilled in policy, an ocean of truth, affection, good character and happiness, the King of the Raghus, protector of justice and love, took note of the place, the time, the occasion and the assembly, and spoke words that were like the very essence of all things, beneficial in their outcome, and sweet to hear like the moon's nectar. "Dear Bharata, you are a bearer of the burden of righteousness, versed in the ways of the world and of the Vedas, and skilled in love.

Brother, you know the custom of the Solar race, and our father's truthfulness to his word, his renown and his love. You know the time and the assembly, the due regard for the elders, and the hearts of all, whether indifferent, friendly or hostile. The conduct of everyone is known to you, and so are your own highest good and mine, and the demands of duty. I have complete trust in you in every way; yet I speak as the occasion requires. Brother, without our father our affairs have been kept in order only by the grace of the guru's family. Otherwise the subjects, the household and the family, together with ourselves, would all have been ruined. If the sun were to set out of season, tell me, to whom in the world would it not bring distress? Brother, Fate raised just such a calamity, but the sage Vasishtha and the king of Mithila have averted it and saved everything.

Yours and mine, together with all our company, at home and in the forest, have the guru's grace for their guardian. The command of mother, father, guru and master is like Shesha, who bears the earth, for it upholds all duty. Obey that command yourself, and make me obey it too. Dear brother, become the protector of the line of the Sun. It is the one means that grants every success, a triple stream of fame, a good destiny and prosperity. Considering this, bear the heavy affliction, and make the people and your family happy. Brother, I have shared out the misfortune among all, but on you falls the greatest hardship for the whole length of the term. Knowing you to be gentle, I still speak harshly. Dear brother, the times are bad, and what I say is not improper. In a time of need, good brothers serve as shields, just as the hands are held up to ward off even the blows of a thunderbolt.

The whole assembly, hearing the words of Rama, the best of the Raghus, which were like an ocean of love steeped in nectar, was moved. The company grew limp, sunk in a trance of affection; seeing their state, Sarada, the goddess of speech, held herself silent. Bharata felt supreme contentment: with his master facing him, kindly disposed, his sorrows and faults had turned away. His face grew bright and the despondency of his mind was gone, as though a mute man had received the gift of speech. Then he bowed to him with love, and spoke, joining his lotus hands. "Lord, I am as happy as if I had gone with you; I have gained the reward of being born into the world." "Now, merciful Lord, whatever command you give, I will take it upon my head and carry it out with reverence." "Lord, give me some support by serving which I may reach the far shore of the appointed term of exile."

Bharata said: "There is one great longing in my heart, but out of fear and shame I cannot speak it." Rama said, "Tell it, brother." Having received the Lord's command, Bharata spoke in words made lovely by affection. "The holy places of Chitrakuta, its shrines and forests, its birds and beasts, its lakes, rivers and waterfalls, and its crowd of hills, and the ground especially, marked with the Lord's footprints: if you command, I will go and see them." Rama said: "By all means take Atri's command upon your head, and then, brother, roam through the forest without fear. By the sage's grace the forest bestows blessings, brother, and is supremely holy and beautiful. In whatever place the chief of the sages directs, there deposit the water of the holy places." Hearing the Lord's words, Bharata was glad, and he joyfully bowed his head at the sage's lotus feet.

"Blessed is Bharata! Glory to Rama, our Lord!" So cried the gods, and their joy burst forth irrepressibly. The sage, the king of Mithila, and everyone in the assembly were filled with rejoicing on hearing Bharata's words. King Videha, thrilled with delight, praised the host of virtues and the love of Bharata and Rama. The charming nature of servant and master, and their vow and love, were purer than the purest. The ministers and all the members of the assembly, full of devotion, began to praise them according to their understanding. As they heard again and again the conversation of Rama and Bharata, in the hearts of both companies there was joy mingled with sorrow. Rama's mother, seeing her sorrow and happiness as equal, recounted the virtues of Rama and comforted the queens. Some spoke in praise of the greatness of the Hero of the Raghus; others extolled the goodness of Bharata.

Then Atri said to Bharata: "Near the hill there is a fine well. Deposit there the water of all the holy places, pure, nectar-like and incomparable."
