The principal rasa of the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa is karuṇa, yet this compassion does not remain grief-centered—it ripens into the fruition of bhakti. Rāma’s going to the forest is the maryādā of social dharma (rāja-dharma and obedience to the father’s word), and Bharata’s arrival is the inner purification of that maryādā—ego-surrender and selfless service. In this section (Dohā 190–199), Guha’s warlike agitation, the calming through reflection on omens, then the embrace of Bharata and Guha and the bath in the Gaṅgā—these are all a journey of transformation from enmity to love. Here Tulsī also builds a bridge between nirguṇa and saguṇa: the glory of the Name (the sanctity of Rāma-nāma, with the example of Vālmīki) hints at the formless principle, while Rāmaghāṭ, the marks of the Lord’s feet, the grass-seat, and Bharata’s full prostration are embodied disciplines of saguṇa-līlā. On this rung of the sopāna, the seeker learns that the proof of bhakti lies not in outer caste or social opinion, but in the marks of love.

Arm yourselves and block the landing places; make ready every preparation for dying. I will meet Bharata face to face in battle, and I will not let him cross the Ganges alive. To die in battle, and that too on the bank of the Ganges, in the cause of Rama, with this body that lasts but a moment, is a great gain. Bharata is Rama's brother and a king, and I am a lowly servant; only by great good fortune is such a death to be won. I will wage the fight of battle for my master's cause, and make my fame shine white through the fourteen worlds. If I give up my life for the sake of the Lord of the Raghus, then both my hands are full of sweets of joy. He who is not counted among the company of the righteous, and who has not a line's mark among the devotees of Rama, lives in this world only as a burden on the earth, and is an axe to the tree of his mother's youth.

Quickly, brothers, make ready your equipment; and when you have heard my command, let no one shrink back. "Very well, lord," they all said with joy, and each one spurred on the zeal of the others. The Nishadas set out, saluting again and again; all of them were heroes, and they delighted in battle and strife. Remembering the sandals of Rama's lotus feet, they bound on their quivers and strung their bows. They put on their coats of mail and set helmets on their heads, and they made ready their axes, bamboo lances and spears. Some were so very skilled at parrying with shields and swords that when they leapt into the air it seemed they had left the earth behind. Each man got his own gear and company in order, and they went and saluted Guha, their chief. Seeing the brave warriors, he judged them all to be fit for the work, and calling each by name, he honored them all.

By Rama's glory and by your strength, my lord, they will leave the enemy's army without a single warrior and without a single horse. While they live they will never set their feet backward, and they will make the earth a mass of headless trunks and severed heads. The lord of the Nishadas looked over his fine band of men and said, "Sound the drum of battle." As he spoke these words, someone sneezed on the left. The augurs declared that the battlefield looked favorable. One old man weighed the omen and said: "Meet Bharata; there will be no quarrel." Bharata is going to win Rama over and bring him back; the omen says that there will be no fighting. Hearing this, Guha said, "The old man has spoken well. Fools act rashly and then repent." Without understanding Bharata's nature and character, to fight without knowing them would be a great loss to our own good.

Lakshmana's love is beautiful in its natural simplicity; enmity and affection cannot be hidden, however one tries to hide them. So saying, Guha began to gather a gift for the meeting. He asked for bulbs, roots, fruits, birds and beasts. Fat, full-grown pathina fish too, and the bearers brought them in load after load. Having arranged the offerings for the meeting, he set out to meet Bharata, and he met with omens auspicious and good, the root of all blessing. Seeing the chief of sages from afar, he spoke his own name and prostrated himself before him. Knowing him to be dear to Rama, the sage gave him his blessing, and the chief of sages explained to Bharata who he was. On hearing that he was Rama's friend, Bharata left his chariot and went on foot, overflowing with love. Guha told his village, his caste and his name, and made his salutation, touching his forehead to the ground.

Bharata embraced him with great love, and the people envied him, praising the way of that love. A cry of "Blessed, blessed!", the root of all good fortune, arose; the gods praised him and rained down flowers. He was lowly in every way, by the custom of the world and by the Vedas, so that one who touched his shadow had to purify himself by sprinkling water. Yet Rama's younger brother took him in a full embrace, and as he met him his whole body was filled with thrill and joy. Those who say "Rama, Rama" even as they yawn have no heap of sins rising up to confront them. And this man Rama has taken to his heart, and has made the world pure together with his whole family. When the water of the Karmanasa falls into the Ganges, the river of the gods, tell me, who does not bow his head to it? The world knows that by repeating the Name backwards, Valmiki became equal to Brahma.

It is no wonder; it has come down through age after age. Whom has Rama, the hero of the Raghus, not raised to honor? The gods spoke of the greatness of Rama's name, and the people of Ayodhya, hearing it again and again, were glad. Bharata met Rama's friend with great love, and asked after his health, his well-being and his welfare. Seeing Bharata's gentle nature and affection, the Nishad at that moment became utterly beside himself. Shyness, love and joy swelled in his heart, and he stood gazing at Bharata with an unblinking stare. Gathering his courage, he bowed again at Bharata's feet, and with folded hands made a loving petition. When I beheld your lotus feet, the very root of all well-being, I counted myself fortunate for all three times. Now, my lord, by your supreme favor to me, there is blessing for me and for ten million generations of my family.

From the time Rama made me his own, from that very time I have become an ornament of the world. Seeing his love and hearing his gracious humility, Shatrughna, Bharata's younger brother, then embraced him. The Nishada, speaking his own name in fair words, respectfully saluted all the queens. Regarding him as equal to Lakshmana, they gave him their blessing: "May you live happily for a hundred lakh years." Seeing the Nishada, the men and women of the city were as glad as if they were looking upon Lakshmana himself. They said, "He has gained the true fruit of life, for Ramabhadra embraced him with both arms." Hearing them praise his good fortune, the Nishada was overjoyed in heart, and led them onward to guide them.

When Bharata saw Shringaverapura, all his limbs went weak with love. As he leaned on the Nishada, giving him his support, he looked as though Humility and Love had taken bodily form. In this way Bharata, with the whole army in his company, went and saw the Ganga, purifier of the world. He bowed to the Rama Ghat, and his mind was so absorbed that it seemed he had met Rama himself. The men and women of the city bowed down, and gazed with joy on the water, which is full of Brahma. Having bathed, they asked with folded hands that their love for the feet of Ramachandra might not be small. Bharata said, "O river of the gods, your sands bestow every happiness, and are a cow of plenty to your servants." "With folded hands I ask this boon of you: a natural, spontaneous love for the feet of Sita and Rama."

The people had pitched their camps here and there, and Bharata saw to the needs of every one of them. Having worshipped the gods and obtained permission, the two brothers went to the mother of Rama. Pressing their feet and speaking again and again in gentle words, Bharata paid honor to all the mothers. Entrusting the service of the mothers to his brother, he called the Nishada to himself. He set out with his hand clasped in the hand of his friend, his body weak with love that was not small. He asked his friend, "Show me that place, so that the burning of my eyes and heart may be cooled a little, where Sita, Rama and Lakshmana slept that night." As he spoke, the corners of his eyes filled with tears. Hearing Bharata's words, the Nishada was filled with grief, and at once led him to that place.

Seeing the lovely bed of kusha grass, Bharata went round it and bowed to it. He touched to his eyes the dust bearing the marks of the feet; the abundance of his love cannot be told. He saw two or four golden spangles, and kept them on his head, counting them as Sita herself. With tearful eyes and anguish in his heart, he spoke gentle and graceful words to his friend. "Bereft of Sita, these spangles have lost their splendor and are dull of lustre, just as the men and women of Ayodhya are dejected and sunk in gloom." "Her father Janaka: to whom shall I compare him, for whom the enjoyments of the world lay in the palm of his hand together with the discipline of yoga?" "Her father-in-law was the king, the sun of the solar race, whom even the Lord of Amaravati, Indra, envied." "Her lord, dear as life, is Rama, the master of the Raghus, by whose greatness whoever is great is made great."

Seeing the grass bed of Sita, that devoted wife who regards her husband as her god, the jewel among good women, my heart does not burst and break with anguish; it is surely harder than the thunderbolt (the weapon of Indra).
