Shloka 2.92.21
भरद्वाजाश्रमात् चित्रकूटमार्गनिर्देशः — Directions from Bharadvaja’s Hermitage to Chitrakuta
यामिमां भगवन् दीनां शोकानशनकर्शिताम्। पितुर्हि महिषीं देवीं देवतामिव पश्यसि।।2.92.20।। एषा तं पुरषव्याघ्रं सिंहविक्रान्तगामिनम्। कौसल्या सुषुवे रामं धातारमदितिर्यथा।।2.92.21।।
asyā vāmabhujaṃ śliṣṭā yaiṣā tiṣṭhati durmanāḥ | karṇikārasya śākheva śīrṇa-puṣpā vanāntare || 2.92.22 ||
etasyās tu sutau devyāḥ kumārau deva-varṇinau | ubhau lakṣmaṇa-śatrughnau vīrau satya-parākramau || 2.92.23 ||
And this lady who stands sorrowful, clinging to her left arm—like a karnikāra branch in the forest whose blossoms have withered—is Queen Sumitrā. Of this queen were born two princes, radiant as gods: the heroes Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna, whose valor is steadfast and true.
O venerable sage, this queen you are looking at, forlorn and emaciated due to grief and fasting, and who resembles a goddess is Kausalya, the principal queen of my father. As Aditi bore Dhata, she bore Rama, the best among men who walks with the powerful stride of a lion.
Dharma honors relationships and truthful recognition: Bharata identifies Sumitrā respectfully and praises ‘satya-parākrama’—valor aligned with righteousness, not mere force.
Bharata continues answering Bharadvāja, pointing out Sumitrā and naming her sons Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna.
True valor (satya-parākrama) in Lakṣmaṇa and Śatrughna, and Bharata’s compassionate perception of Sumitrā’s grief.
