Shloka 2.76.20
दशरथस्य अन्त्येष्टि-विधानम् — Dasaratha’s Funeral Rites and Ayodhya’s Mourning
प्रसव्यं चापि तं चकुः ऋत्विजोऽग्निचितं नृपम्।स्त्रियश्च शोकसन्तप्ताः कौसल्याप्रमुखास्तदा।।2.76.20।।
uddhṛtaṃ tailasaṃrodhāt sa tu bhūmau niveśitam |
āpītavarṇavadanaṃ prasuptam iva bhūmipam || 2.76.4 ||
saṃveśya śayane cāgrye nānāratnapariṣkṛte |
tato daśarathaṃ putro vilalāpa suduḥkhitaḥ || 2.76.5 ||
Daśaratha, the king, was taken out from the oil-preserving vessel and placed upon the ground; his face, pale-yellow in hue, looked as though he were asleep. Then, after laying him on a splendid couch adorned with many kinds of jewels, his son—overwhelmed with grief—lamented.
Then the priests and other women led by Kausalya who was consumed with grief circumambulated the pyre in the reverse direction as the king's body was engulfed by flames.
Dharma includes honoring the dead with proper rites and dignity; even amid grief, the community maintains respectful procedures for a ruler’s final journey.
Daśaratha’s preserved body is brought out, arranged for the rites, and Bharata, seeing him, breaks into lamentation.
Filial devotion and reverence—Bharata’s grief reflects love and responsibility toward his father.
