Shloka 2.64.47

शब्दवेध्य-अनर्थः, ऋषिशापः, दशरथस्य प्राणत्यागः (The Sound-Target Tragedy, the Sage’s Curse, and Dasaratha’s Death)

एवं स कृपणं तत्र पर्यदेवयतासकृत्।ततोऽस्मै कर्तुमुदकं प्रवृत्तस्सहभार्यया।।।।

evaṃ sa kṛpaṇaṃ tatra paryadevayatāsakṛt | tato ’smai kartum udakaṃ pravṛttaḥ saha bhāryayā ||

Thus, there he lamented piteously again and again. Then, together with his wife, he began to perform the ritual water-offerings for their departed son.

In this way the ascetic piteously wailed again and again. Thereafter, he with his wife set about to perform the funeral obsequies of their son.

Even in overwhelming grief, the parents uphold dharma by performing the prescribed funeral rites; duty toward the dead is not abandoned because of sorrow.

After lamenting for his slain son, the ascetic, with his wife, begins the funeral water-offerings (udaka) for the boy.

Ritual responsibility and steadfastness in dharma—continuing obligatory rites despite personal devastation.
