Shloka 2.47.11

अयोध्यायाः पौरविलापः (Lament of the Citizens of Ayodhya on Rama’s Absence)

निर्यातास्तेन वीरेण सह नित्यं जितात्मना।विहीनास्तेन च पुनः कथं पश्याम तां पुरीम्।।।।

niryātās tena vīreṇa saha nityaṃ jitātmanā | vihīnāḥ tena ca punaḥ kathaṃ paśyāma tāṃ purīm || 2.47.11 ||

We always departed in the company of that heroic man, ever self-controlled; now bereft of him, how can we look upon that city again?

Having left (that city) with the valiant and self-restrained Rama, how can we now return without him ?

Dharma is tied to moral leadership: the city’s identity and ethical stability are felt to depend on the presence of a self-restrained, righteous prince.

The citizens, having once left with Rama, now feel shame and grief at the thought of returning to Ayodhya without him.

Rama’s self-mastery (jitātmatā) as a public virtue that inspires confidence and moral order.
