Shloka 2.32.21
द्वात्रिंशस्सर्गः — Gifts to Suyajna and the Brahmins; Trijata’s Petition and Rama’s Charity
मेखलीनां महासङ्घः कौसल्यां समुपस्थितः।।।।तेषां सहस्रं सौमित्रे प्रत्येकं सम्प्रदापय।
mekhalīnāṁ mahāsaṅghaḥ kausalyāṁ samupasthitaḥ || teṣāṁ sahasraṁ saumitre pratyekaṁ sampradāpaya |
A great multitude of mekhalins—brahmacārins wearing the sacred girdle—stands in attendance upon Kausalyā. O Saumitra (Lakṣmaṇa), grant to each of them a thousand as a gift.
Give each of the large number of brahmacharis wearing girdles and working under Kausalya a thousand (cows or gold coins), O Lakshmana!
It highlights dāna-dharma (righteous giving): those living in discipline and learning (brahmacārins) are to be honored and supported through generous gifts.
Rāma’s instruction reflects truthful integrity in action—his commitment to righteous conduct is expressed not only in words but in concrete, fair distribution of gifts to each recipient.
