पादुकाप्रदानम् (The Gift of the Sandals and Delegated Kingship)
कामाद्वा तात लोभाद्वा मात्रातुभ्यमिदं कृतम्।न तन्मनसि कर्तव्यं वर्तितव्यं च मातृवत्।।2.112.19।।
lakṣmīś candrād apeyād vā himavān vā himaṃ tyajet | atīyāt sāgaro velāṃ na pratijñām ahaṃ pituḥ || 2.112.18 ||
The moon may lose its radiance, the Himālaya may cast off its snow, the ocean may overstep its boundary—yet I will not forsake my father’s promise.
Dear brother, whether out of affection or greed, your mother has done this for yoursake. It should not agitate your mind. You should conduct yourself as one should towards one's mother.
Satya and pratijñā-pālana: truthfulness expressed as unwavering fidelity to a vow, even when circumstances tempt compromise.
