O gentle one, for fourteen years I shall take refuge in the Daṇḍaka forest and fulfill my allotted portion, as bestowed by my great-souled father.

O handsome one, as for myself, I shall enjoy the portion bestowed on me by my magnanimous father and shall take refuge in the Dandaka forest for fourteen years.

Dharma is steadfast endurance: once a rightful allotment (even exile) is assigned, one completes it faithfully for the stipulated time.

Rama confirms the fixed term of exile and his resolve to remain in the forest.

Dhṛti (fortitude) and niyama (discipline)—Rama accepts the hardship as his rightful duty.
