पितृमरणश्रवणं जलक्रिया च (Hearing of Daśaratha’s death and the libation rites at Mandākinī)
इदं भुङ्क्ष्वमहाराज प्रीतो यदशना वयम्।यदन्नः पुरुषो भवति तदन्ना स्तस्य देवताः।।।।
pitryaṃ rājyaṃ parityajya sa nārhasi narottama |
āsthātuṃ kāpathaṃ duḥkhaṃ viṣamaṃ bahu-kaṇṭakam ||
O best of men, you should not abandon your father’s kingdom and take to a misguided path—painful, perilous, uneven, and thorny with many dangers.
O great king, we offer you such food as we partake now. Be pleased to accept it. For, his gods are offered the food a man takes.
Rājadharma and inherited responsibility: abandoning rightful duty for an unwise course is portrayed as ethically improper and socially harmful.
A speaker urges Rāma not to renounce the patrimonial kingdom, warning that such renunciation leads to hardship and danger.
Steadfastness in duty: the ideal person does not choose a dramatic but harmful path when rightful responsibility calls.
