मारीचोपदेश-प्रतिषेधः / Ravana Rejects Maricha’s Counsel and Orders the Golden Deer Deception
अपक्रान्ते च काकुत्स्थे लक्ष्मणे च यथासुखम्।आनयिष्यामि वैदेहीं सहस्राक्षश्शचीमिव।।3.40.22।।
apakrānte ca kākutsthe lakṣmaṇe ca yathāsukham | ānayiṣyāmi vaidehīṃ sahasrākṣaḥ śacīm iva || 3.40.22 ||
When both Kakutstha’s descendant and Lakṣmaṇa have gone away, I will take Vaidehī with ease—like the thousand-eyed Indra took Śacī.
When Rama and Lakshmana are away I will comfortably abduct Vaidehi like the thousand-eyed Indra brought Sachi.
It foregrounds the violation of dharma through abducting another’s wife; the Ramayana treats protection of marital fidelity and consent as central to righteous order.
Rāvaṇa states his intention to seize Sītā once Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are removed from the hermitage.
By contrast, the virtue of maryādā (respecting boundaries—especially marital and social) is emphasized as what Rāvaṇa transgresses.
