The Battle of Jālandhara and Viṣṇu; the Droṇa Mountain Herbs and the Milk Ocean Episode

As Nārada relates, Jālandhara, enraged that Indra deceitfully slew Bala, overwhelms Indra with volleys of arrows. Indra flees while remembering Hari, and Jālandhara seizes Indra’s chariot. The scene turns to Viṣṇu, who takes up the sword Nandaka and crushes the demon hosts; fierce exchanges follow, and Śailaromā, after wondrous feats, is slain. When the devas lie fallen, Viṣṇu rebukes Bṛhaspati; Dhiṣaṇa brings life-restoring herbs from Mount Droṇa in the Kṣīra-sāgara (Milk Ocean) and revives the gods, rekindling the war. Learning this secret, Jālandhara storms the Milk Ocean and compels Droṇagiri to sink into Rasātala. In the climactic duel, Viṣṇu restrains his power out of regard for Lakṣmī. Lakṣmī intervenes as Jālandhara’s sister and secures Viṣṇu’s release; Viṣṇu then grants Jālandhara the boon of dwelling with Lakṣmī in the Milk Ocean, linking the battle-myth to refuge-dharma and sacred geography.
