The Glory of Gopī-candana (Sacred Vaiṣṇava Clay)

Chapter PP.6.67 extols Gopī-candana (Gopikā-candana), the sacred Vaiṣṇava clay used for tilaka and unction, as a portable tīrtha and a sanctifier of the household. It declares that where it is kept, grief, delusion, and inauspiciousness do not remain; the ancestors are pleased and the family line flourishes. Clay connected with Gopī-Puṣkara is said to purify the body and destroy disease when applied. Wearing it is portrayed as bestowing mokṣa, praised by all tīrthas and kṣetras. The chapter further aligns it with Tulasī wood and the earth from its root, and prescribes making a paste by combining Gopī-candana with Hari-candana for application. It concludes with strong claims of pāpa-kṣaya: even grave sinners are purified at once, and Viṣṇu’s supreme abode is promised.
