The Citra Narrative: The Power of Vaiśākha Dawn-Bathing, Dāna, and Hearing Mādhava’s Hymn

PP.5.93 continues a layered Purāṇic dialogue: Nārada recounts a royal encounter with the sage Jātūkarṇa. Asked by King Divodāsa how a woman may be freed from suffering, the sage teaches a highly meritorious yet often “unpublicized” remedy—Vaiśākha observances focused on dawn bathing, tīrtha-snāna, and dāna (charitable giving), strengthened by hearing and praising Hari/Mādhava. Using vivid analogies—sins fleeing like serpents before Hari or Garuḍa—the chapter declares the decisive destruction of pāpa when the Sun enters Meṣa (Aries) and Vaiśākha begins. The narrative ends with the woman’s marital happiness restored, lineage results including the birth of Sudeva, and a royal instruction to arrange marriage for one purified by bathing in the Revā, followed by a colophon identifying the chapter as the Citra narrative within the Vaiśākha-māhātmya.
