The Glory of Ekādaśī: Sin, Food-Taboo, Vigil, and the Complete Vrata Procedure

PP.7.22 begins with a request to hear Ekādaśī’s full merit and complete observance, proclaiming it the supreme vow. An origin narrative follows: the Lord creates Pāpapuruṣa (Sin), establishes the hells, visits Yama, and beholds the lament of sinners. Moved by compassion, Viṣṇu manifests as the Ekādaśī tithi, by which sinners are purified and attain the highest abode. Fearing destruction, Pāpapuruṣa seeks refuge; Viṣṇu assigns him a dwelling “in food” on Ekādaśī, thereby grounding the taboo against grains and certain foods. The chapter then sets out the detailed vrata-vidhi: Daśamī disciplines and dietary restraints, Ekādaśī worship and night-long vigil (jāgaraṇa), temple acts (flags, lamps, maṇḍapas, sacred drawings), recitation of scripture, avoidance of heretical talk, and the precise timing of Dvādaśī pāraṇa—concluding with the promise of liberation for proper observance.
