The Account of Mohinī (Mohinī-kathanam): Ekādaśī Nirṇaya, Daśamī Boundary, and Aruṇodaya
स्वाती सूर्योदये विद्धो त्यजंत्यकादशीं सति । निष्कामा मध्यरात्रे च विद्धां मुंचन्ति याम्यया ॥ ८ ॥
svātī sūryodaye viddho tyajaṃtyakādaśīṃ sati | niṣkāmā madhyarātre ca viddhāṃ muṃcanti yāmyayā || 8 ||
If the Ekādaśī is “pierced” (viddha) at sunrise under the nakṣatra Svātī, the virtuous abandon that Ekādaśī. And those who observe without desire or personal motive give up an Ekādaśī that is pierced even at midnight, according to the Yāmya night watch.
Sanatkumara (teaching Narada)
Vrata: Ekadashi
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It emphasizes purity of observance: a vrata like Ekādaśī should be kept only when the tithi is not ‘viddhā’ (mixed/contaminated), because correct timing safeguards the spiritual fruit of the vow.
By insisting on disciplined, rule-based Ekādaśī practice—especially by the niṣkāma devotee—it frames bhakti as sincere worship supported by careful adherence to sacred time (kāla).
Jyotiṣa/kalā-nirṇaya: deciding vrata days through tithi-śuddhi (avoiding viddhā) and using sunrise and night-watch (yāma) markers, with reference to nakṣatra (Svātī).
