Adhyaya 71 — The King’s Remorse and the Sage’s Counsel on the Necessity of a Wife
ब्राह्मण्याः दर्शनञ्चैव दौःशील्यापगमं तथा ।
प्रेषणं भर्तृगेहे च कार्यमागमने च यत् ॥
brāhmaṇyā darśanañ caiva dauḥśīlyāpagamaṃ tathā / preṣaṇaṃ bhartṛgehe ca kāryam āgamane ca yat
(He related) the sighting of the brāhmaṇa woman, the removal of the stain of ill repute, her being sent to her husband’s house, and also what was arranged regarding the (rākṣasa’s) coming when there was a task.
Dharma decisions require full context: the king presents all relevant particulars—harm, remedy, and ongoing obligations—so that the sage can prescribe a complete rectification.
Narrative instruction within manvantara; serves as dharma-vicāra (ethical inquiry) rather than cosmological exposition.
The ‘summary’ functions like self-audit: enumerating events is a contemplative act that converts lived confusion into intelligible karmic pattern, preparing the mind for corrective insight.
