Adhyaya 45 — Jaimini’s Cosmological Questions and the Opening of Markandeya’s Account of Primary Creation
etatsamastaṃ jānīyāt kṣetrakṣetrajñalakṣaṇam | ityeṣa prākṛtaḥ sargaḥ kṣetrajñādhiṣṭhitas tu saḥ | abuddhipūrvaḥ prathamaḥ prādurbhūtas taḍid yathā
All this should be understood as the defining mark of the field and the knower of the field. Thus this is the material (prākṛta) creation, presided over by the kṣetrajña; it is the first, arising before deliberative intelligence—appearing suddenly like lightning.

Creation is not merely mechanical: it is ‘presided over’ by a knowing principle; therefore, knowledge (jñāna) is central to understanding reality and one’s place within it.
Directly Sarga (primary creation), concluding the prākṛta-sarga description and its supervision by kṣetrajña.
‘Like lightning’ suggests instantaneous manifestation from the causal level—analogous to sudden insight where the witness-principle is recognized prior to thought (abuddhipūrva).
