Virāṭa-parva Adhyāya 25: Kaurava Deliberation and the Search Directive (अन्वेषण-आदेशः)
गुप्तचर बोले--नरेन्द्र! हमने उस विशाल वनमें पाण्डवोंकी खोजके लिये सदा महान् प्रयत्न जारी रखा है ।।
vaśiṣṭha uvāca—narēndra! vayaṁ tasmin vipule vane pāṇḍavānāṁ mārgaṇāya satataṁ mahān prayatnaṁ pravartitavantaḥ. nirjane mṛgasaṁkīrṇe nānādruma-latākule, latāpratāna-bahule nānāgulma-samāvṛte vane vicaran, tatra tatra nānāprakāraiḥ teṣāṁ padacihnāni mṛgayāmāsa; tathāpi te sudṛḍha-parākramāḥ kuntīkumārāḥ kena mārgeṇa kva gatāḥ—na vijñātam asmābhiḥ.
The spy reported: “O king, we have kept up relentless efforts to find the Pāṇḍavas in that vast forest. It is a lonely wilderness teeming with deer—thick with many kinds of trees and creepers, dense with spreading vines, and covered with varied shrubs. We have roamed through its different tracts, searching in many ways for the traces of their footsteps; yet we could not learn by which path those steadfast, mighty sons of Kuntī went, nor where they have gone.”
