Draupadī’s Lament and Indictment of Misfortune
जगामावासमेवाथ सा तदा द्रुपदात्मजा | कृत्वा शौचं यथान्यायं कृष्णा सा तनुमध्यमा
vaiśampāyana uvāca |
jagāmāvāsam evātha sā tadā drupadātmajā |
kṛtvā śaucaṃ yathānyāyaṃ kṛṣṇā sā tanumadhyamā ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Then the daughter of Drupada went back to her own dwelling. There, slender-waisted Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), having performed the prescribed rites of purification in the proper manner, began to reflect—still weeping—on how her suffering might be remedied.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Even in acute grief, one should not abandon propriety and discipline: Draupadī first performs śauca yathā-nyāyam (purification according to rule) and then turns to thoughtful, dharmic deliberation about a remedy, showing self-restraint and ethical clarity under pressure.
After the preceding distressing events, Draupadī returns to her residence. She performs the appropriate cleansing/purificatory acts and, while still crying, begins to consider what course of action could remove or address her suffering.
