Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Bhīmasena, what sort of work will you be able to do in the land of the Matsyas? On Mount Gandhamādana you slew the Yakṣas called Krodhavaśa—red-eyed with wrath—and also mighty Rākṣasas; and you brought many lotuses for the Pāñcāla princess (Draupadī). You killed the dreadful man-eating Rākṣasa-king Baka for the sake of protecting a brāhmaṇa family, O son of Kuntī, subduer of foes, and thus you made Ekacakrā secure and free from fear. You also slew the powerful Hiḍimba and the Rākṣasa Kirmīra, O strong-armed one, making the forest ‘thornless’—safe for travelers. And when the fair-smiling Draupadī fell into danger, you freed her by killing Jaṭāsura. Therefore, my dear one—full of strength and fierce in endurance—tell me: by what role or duty will you live contentedly in Virāṭa’s court?”

Educational Q&A

Even extraordinary power must be governed by dharma and context: Yudhiṣṭhira highlights Bhīma’s past righteous uses of strength—protecting brāhmaṇas, rescuing Draupadī, removing threats—then asks how such force can be ethically and safely ‘reassigned’ into a humble, concealed role during the incognito year, where restraint and strategy are themselves duties.

As the Pāṇḍavas plan their year of concealment in Virāṭa’s Matsya kingdom, Yudhiṣṭhira questions Bhīma about what occupation he can adopt at Virāṭa’s court. He recalls Bhīma’s famous feats—slaying Baka, Hiḍimba, Kirmīra, Jaṭāsura, and fighting Yakṣas at Gandhamādana—underscoring Bhīma’s formidable nature and asking what role will allow him to remain undiscovered and content.
