Keśinī’s Inquiry to Bāhuka and the Emotional Signs of Concealed Identity (केशिन्याः बाहुकपरीक्षा)

Bāhuka said: “I will make this matter directly evident by striking down the bibhītaka tree. Then, O king, in this calculation there will be nothing hidden or merely inferred. Once it is computed here before your eyes, the number will no longer remain ‘indirect’.”

Educational Q&A

The verse contrasts parokṣa (indirect, inferential knowledge) with pratyakṣa (direct verification), implying that reliable judgment—especially about numbers and claims—should be grounded in demonstrable evidence when possible.

Bṛhadaśva addresses the king and proposes to fell the bibhītaka tree so the fruit can be counted openly, turning an uncertain or inferred number into a directly confirmed one.
