Thus, while performing sacrifices as a patron and enjoying royal pastimes, that lord of men—himself the lord of the earth—protected the land, making it abundant in wealth and resources. The verse underscores the ethical ideal of kingship: prosperity is sustained not by indulgence alone, but by righteous ritual duty and vigilant governance.

Educational Q&A

A king’s dharma is to unite personal enjoyment with public responsibility: by upholding yajña (righteous duty and social-religious order) and by actively protecting the realm, he ensures prosperity for the land and its people.

Bṛhadaśva describes Nala’s earlier reign: Nala performs sacrifices as a royal patron, lives in comfort, and at the same time safeguards and administers the kingdom so that the earth remains rich and well-provided.
