Yudhiṣṭhira said: “Skillful competence is the chief foundation of dharma; generosity is the chief foundation of fame. Truth is the chief foundation of heaven, and good conduct is the chief foundation of happiness.”
युधिछिर उवाच
The verse presents four ethical ‘foundations’: competence supports righteous living (dharma), generosity supports lasting honor (fame), truthfulness supports heavenly merit (svarga), and good character supports genuine happiness (sukha).
In the Vana Parva setting, Yudhiṣṭhira articulates a concise moral maxim, summarizing how key virtues function as the primary supports for higher goals—dharma, reputation, heavenly reward, and happiness.
