एकाग्रं चिन्तयिष्यामि पीत्वा वेत्स्यामि वा जलम् | स्यात् तु दुर्योधनेनेदमुपांशुविहितं कृतम्,धर्मपुत्रो महाबाहुर्विललाप सुविस्तरम् । अर्जुन मरे पड़े थे; उनके धनुष-बाण इधर-उधर बिखरे थे। भीमसेन और नकुल-सहदेव भी प्राणरहित हो निश्रेष्ट हो गये थे। इन सबको देखकर युधिष्ठिर गरम-गरम लंबी साँसें खींचने लगे। उनके नेत्रोंसे शोकके आँसू उमड़कर उन्हें भिगो रहे थे। अपने समस्त भ्राताओंको इस प्रकार धराशायी हुए देख महाबाह धर्मपुत्र युधिष्ठिर गहरी चिन्तामें डूब गये और देरतक विलाप करते रहे-- “इस विषयमें मैं चित्तको एकाग्र करके फिर सोचूँगा अथवा पानी पीकर इस रहस्यको समझनेकी चेष्टा करूँगा। सम्भव है, दुर्योधनने चुपके-चुपके कोई षड्यन्त्र किया हो
ekāgraṃ cintayiṣyāmi pītvā vetsyāmi vā jalam | syāt tu duryodhanenedam upāṃśu-vihitaṃ kṛtam, dharmaputro mahābāhur vilalāpa suvistaram ||
Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “I shall reflect with a single-pointed mind; or, after drinking water, I will try to understand this mystery. It may be that Duryodhana has secretly contrived this.” Seeing his brothers fallen senseless and lifeless, the mighty-armed Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira sank into anxious thought and lamented at length—his grief revealing both his moral caution and his refusal to judge without clarity.
वैशग्पायन उवाच
In crisis, Yudhiṣṭhira models ethical restraint: he seeks clarity through focused reflection rather than acting on raw emotion. The verse highlights discernment (viveka) and the dharmic impulse to understand causes before assigning blame or taking action.
After encountering a shocking scene (his brothers fallen), Yudhiṣṭhira laments and tries to make sense of it. He considers that the calamity might be due to a hidden plot by Duryodhana, and resolves to think carefully—or regain composure (even by drinking water) to understand the situation.
