Hearing of their improper conduct, Sugrīva concluded that they had accomplished their mission. For such bold, even impertinent behavior is characteristic of servants who have succeeded in the task entrusted to them.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच
External behavior can be read as a sign of inner outcome: when subordinates return successful, they may display unusual boldness or relaxed propriety. The verse highlights a pragmatic ethical insight—leaders often infer results from conduct, while also implying that success can tempt people into overconfidence.
Mārkaṇḍeya narrates that Sugrīva, upon hearing reports of the attendants’ improper or audacious behavior, took it as evidence that they had completed their assigned work and returned successful.
