Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “O supremely choice-worthy One, O giver of boons, O Endless Lord—come! Become the refuge of those who have no refuge, for none but you can aid the helpless devotee. O Primeval Person, you lie beyond the reach of the life-breath and the movements of the mind. O Supreme Self, witness of all, I have come to you for shelter. O God who cherishes those who surrender—out of compassion, protect me.”

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches śaraṇāgati (taking refuge): when human capacities (breath, mind, effort) cannot reach the ultimate, one turns to the Supreme as the sole refuge of the refuge-less, trusting in divine compassion and protection.

In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a devotee voices an urgent supplication to the Supreme Lord—invoking epithets like Ananta and Purāṇa-puruṣa—asking the deity, known for protecting those who surrender, to come and save the helpless.
