Surabhi–Indra Dialogue as a Governance Exemplar
tato 'haṃ tvām anuprāptaḥ kauravāṇām avekṣayā | sadā hy adhikaḥ snehaḥ prītiś ca tvayi me prabho ||
Then I came to you, O lord, to see for myself the condition of the Kauravas. For from long ago my affection and fond regard for you have been greater than for others—born of enduring loyalty and personal attachment.
The verse highlights responsible concern grounded in relationship: one should not remain indifferent to the welfare and conduct of one’s kin or community. Affection (sneha) and esteem (prīti) motivate a person to verify circumstances directly and act with informed judgment rather than hearsay.
Vaiśampāyana reports that the speaker has come to address the listener after arriving specifically to assess the state of the Kauravas. He also states his longstanding, exceptional affection and regard for the listener, establishing trust and the emotional basis for the ensuing counsel or conversation.
