जनमेजय उवाच कथं प्रयातो दाशाहों महात्मा मधुसूदन: । कानि वा व्रजतस्तस्य निमित्तानि महौजस:
janamejaya uvāca | kathaṁ prayāto dāśārho mahātmā madhusūdanaḥ | kāni vā vrajatastasya nimittāni mahaujasāḥ ||
Janamejaya said: “How did the great-souled Madhusūdana, the foremost of the Dāśārhas, set out on his journey? And as that mighty one was departing, what auspicious or inauspicious omens appeared?”
जनमेजय उवाच
The verse highlights the epic’s ethical attention to ‘nimitta’—signs interpreted around major decisions. It frames Kṛṣṇa’s mission as morally weighty and historically consequential, inviting reflection on how leaders read circumstances, seek counsel, and act responsibly amid uncertainty.
Janamejaya asks how Kṛṣṇa (Madhusūdana), described as the great-souled hero of the Dāśārha line, began his journey and what omens—favorable or unfavorable—were seen at the time of his departure, setting up a detailed account of the departure and its portents.
